Abstract TwonewspeciesofthefamilyCeratocanthidaearcdescribedunderthe
nan、esofMt1(/''asostest1(1、l'a'1-.,,Iespno、,.andMad1clsostessにl tl、/-11sp no、,.Thisisthefirst
articledealingwiththeoccurrenceof、thcfamilyCeratocanthidae、ll-omTai、、,an.
TheCeratocanthidaeisamoderate-sizedfamilyoftheScarabaeoideacontaining
over250species intheworld(1992, 0c1-ll,p.1).Membersofthisfamilyaremainly
distributedintheforestsofthetropicalandsubtropical zones. IntropicalAsia,seven
generaandmorethan50specieshavebeenrecorded. Thenorthernperiphery ofthe
distributionalareaofthisfamilyinAsiaisKagoshimaatthesouthernpartofKyushu,
SouthwestJapan.However,nospecieshashithertobeenknownfromTaiwan.
Thebeetlesofthis familypossessveryremarkablecharacteristics: thebodyand
legsarecontractile,andalsothebody iscapableofrollingup likeaball. Theyare
often foundunder thebarkofrottenwoodlyingontheforest floor. InJapan,Mad1-a-
.sosteskazunla10cHI,JoHKIetNAKAT^,1990,wasrecorded fromthegalleryofwood-
feedingtermites,Coptoter111esfo1・1nos1tulusSHIRAKlonNakanoshimaIslan(i,theTokara
Islands,SouthwestJapan(IwATAeta1., l990).Thelarvaeofthebeetlesareknown to
feedonthedetritusoftermitesandwood-feedingcockroaches.

Body well convex above. Colourblack, dorsal sidewith amoderate cupreous
tinge;ventralsidesomewhatreddish,stronglyshining;legsblackwithaslightcupre-
oustinge.
Headsubpentagona1,stronglyconvexanteriad,alittletransverse,withinterspaces
betweenpuncturesshining;clypeuswidelyand triangularlyproduced forwards,dis-
tinctlyserratealongoutermargin,withastrongsharptoothatthemiddle;genalangles
wellproducedlateradandtoothed;ocularcanthuswell developedposteriadandex-
tendingtoapicalfive-sixthsofeyelength;clypeo-gena1sutureindistinct;surfacerather
sparselycoveredwith roun coarse,ocellatetohorseshoe-shapedshallowpunctures
ondisc,whichareclearlyarrangedinconcentriccircles;marginalportionofheadwith
longfinesculptures.Eyeobviouslynarrowandelongateindorsalview.Antennaewith
tensegments.
Pronotum simple in shape, about 17 times as wideas long (n=1), shining
smooth;apexbisinuate,conspicuouslyboldlyborderedbyadoublemarginal lines,
outermarginsbecomingbolder laterad;lateralmarginsfinelybordered;anteriorangles
angulatewithroundedcorners,posteriorangleswidelyrounded;baseweaklybisinu-
ate,widelyandroundlyproducedinmiddle,basalmarginboldlybordere theborder
boldestatthemiddle;surfacerathersparselycoveredwithsimilar-sizedpuncturesto
thoseonheadinmiddle,becomingcoarseranddenserlaterad,eachwithashort fine
hair. Scutellum moderate-size ratheracutelyangledatapex, triangularlyconcaveat
themiddle,rugose-punctateandpubescent.
Elytrastronglyconvex,distinctlysubglobular,about l2timesas longaswide,
noticeablycircularinoutlinethoughbearingsixprotuberancesnearapicesclearlyper-
ceptibleindorsal view,with lateral marginsproduced ventradinbasal halves;each
elytronwithfourweakdorsal longitudinalcostae: thefirstcosta(=sutural)almostre-
ducedandnotraisedinanteriortwo-thirds,distinctlyraisedinposterior third;thesec-
ondcosta veryslightlyraised inapical five-sixthsanddistinctlyraised inposterior
sixth,thoughonceinterruptednearapex;thethirdcostaweaklyraised fromanterior

weaklongitudinalcostae: thefirst(=sutural)costaalmostreducedandnotraisedinan-
terior two-thirds,distinctlyraisedinposterior third; thesecondcostaalmostreduced
andflatthroughout,thoughthetraceisbarelyperceptibleasanimpunctate1ongitudi-
na1smootharea;thethirdcostaveryweakinanteriortwo-thirdsthoughbarelypercep-
tibleasanimpunctatelongitudina1smoothareaaswellasthesecon andgradually
raised in posterior thir strongly costateinposterior end; the fourth costaweakly
raisedinanterior two-thirds,andobviouslystronger inposterior third;surfaceshal-
lowly,somewhat denselycoveredwitharcuatetohorseshoe-shapedsmall punctures,

要 約
越智輝雄・蔡 経甫・益本仁准i :台湾産マンマルコガネムシ科2新極について. _ 台湾
にマンマルコガネムシ科の甲虫の2新種が分布していることが判明した. そこで, 本論文にて
Mad'asostestalwanensesp nov.とM.suzukiispnov.と命名した. また,両者を同定できる検索表
もつけた. なお,台湾にこの科の昆i、が分布していることの報告としてもこの論文が最初であ
る.
