Abstract Two new pterostichine carabid beetles, Pte,,ostic・bus (Nia1oe) lao' sp
nov and P. (IV.) ,rltlsashlensis sp nov., aredescribed from central Honshu, Japan.
TheformerbelongstothelatlstylisgroupandisfoundonthehillydistrictinAichi
Prefecture. The lattermay berelated to P. (IV.) toke/'11YosHIDAet TANAKAandis
distributed to thelowaltitudeareasoftheKwantoMountainRange.
Thereoccur twounnamedapterouspterostichinecarabidsbelongingtothesub-
genusNia1oeTANAKAonthehillsandlowmountainsincentralHonshu,Japan. One
of themwasrecentlydiscoveredbyMr. MinoruTAOinanenvironment exceptional
for ahabitatofpterostichinesinAichiPrefecture. Theotherwasfirst collected by
myselfmore than twenty yearsagoon lowmountainsinSaitamaPrefecture. At a
glance, it appeared to bean aberrant form of somepterostichines, but additional
examplesofthesamespecieswerelatercollectedfromvariousplaces,showingthat the
beetleinquestionisratherwidelydistributedtothelowaltitudeareasoftheKwanto
Mountain Range. Both areclearlyseparated from their relatives by havingchar-
acteristic facies and must be new to science. I am describing herewith the former
speciesunderthenameofPterostlchus(Ma/oe)tactsp nov and thelatter under that
ofP.(tv)musashlenslssp Theabbreviations usedherein are the sameas those

explained in previouspapersofmine. All thebolo-andallotypes arepreservedin

obliquelyextending toshoulder, andmeetingwith lateral border at an obtusemaI_
definedangle;lateralmarginsweaklyarcuate,preapica1emarginationsshallow,apices
roundedthoughobtuselyangulateat thesuture;scutellarstrictolyingoninterval1,
andconnectingwithbasalborder;striaedeep,almostsmooth,thoughweaklynotched
atthebottoms;intervalsgentlyconvex;interval3withthreedorsalpores,anteriorone
adjoiningstria3atbasal fourthtothird,whileposterior twoadjoinstria2atabout
middleandapicalfourth,respectively;marginalseriesofpores19-21innumber,wjdely
spacedatmiddle;microsculpturescarcelyvisibleondisc, formedbyfinetransverse
meshesin both sexes.
Basaltwosegmentsofmeso-andmetatarsiexternallysulcate. Ventershiny, im_
punctate; presternal process furrowed atmiddle, unbordered; in themale, terminal
sternite deeplyand triangularly concaveat middle, apical margin emarginate, and
with an obtuse projection at middle. Aedeagus robust,stronglybent at basal two_

Notes. Judgingfromtheconfigurationofmalegenitalia,thepresentnewspecies
doubtlessbelongstothelatlstylisgroup,but isclearlydiscriminated fromtheother
membersof thegroupbyconspicuouslylarger bodywithwider pronotum and dif-
ferentlyshapedterminalsterniteinthemale. All the other members of the /atisり'/Is
groupareusually foundunderstonesbymountainstreams, while thepresent new
speciesdwellsunderheapsofdeadleavesbyasmallreservoirlyingonaIowaltitude
hillside. It seems rare.

Descrtption. Length (measured as in the preceding species) 16.0-17.6mm;
width 6.1-6.8mm. Robust andconvex, black,shiny; labrum,mandibles, antennae,
femoraand tibiaedarkreddishbrown; palpiandtarsi reddishbrown.
Headmoderatelyconvex,shiny;labrum,mandiblesandpalpinormal;eyescon-
vex; temporaeshorter thaneyes, strongly contracted behind, gently swollen; genae
finely,sometimesstronglyrugosenear buccal fissure;clypea1suturefine, thoughdis-
tinct; frontal furrowsdistinct and wide, divergent inposterior halves, and widening
ateachextremity;supraorbitalareasconvex; lateralgroovesdeep,extendingtobe-
hind thepost-eyelevel; antennae relativelyshort, extendingalittlebeyondelytral
shoulder;surfaceminutely punctate, microsculpturescarcely visible, formed by fine
isodiametricmeshes.
Pronotumcordate, well convex,shiny, widest at apical fourth, ca.137 timesas
wideashead (PW/HW 129-1.41, mean t37), aswideas long inalmost thesame
proportion(PW/PL132-1.42, mean t 36), ca.14 timesaswideasbase(PW/PBW
1.35-1.47,mean t41);lateralmarginsevenlywellarcuateinapical two-thirds, then
stronglyconvergent posteriadandsinuatebeforebase, basal partsparallelorsome-
what convergent posteriad; apicalmargingentlyemarginate, very finely andvaguely
bordered oneachside, apical anglesproduced, rounded at the tips; basalmargina
littlenarrower thantheapical,weaklyemarginate,veryfinelyborderedthroughout;
basalanglesnearlyrectangular,oftenalittleproducedlaterad, thoughbluntat the
tips;basal foveaedistinct, ratherdeeplyandlongitudinallyconcaveinbasalhalves,

Basal twoor threesegmentsofmeso-andmetatarsiexternallysulcate. Venter
smooth, thoughmesepisternaandapicalhalvesof abdominalsternites2-3areoften
punctate;presternalprocessalmost flat, thoughvaguelyfurrowedatmiddle; in the
male, terminal sternite trapezoida11yand deeply concaveat middle, apical margin
deeplyemarginate,andwithanasymmetricalprojection,whichisobliquelyproduced
leftwardsfromtherightsideoftheemarginationinventralview.
Aedeagusstronglybentatmorethan90degreesatbasalthird,thenalmoststrajght-
1yextendingtoapexinlateralview,apicaltwo-thirdsgentlybentrightwards,andwith
adistincttumour ontherightsideatapical thirdindorsalview;leftparamerewide,
square; right oneslender,wellarcuateinapicalhalf,gentlytaperingtowardsapex,
which isrounded.

Notes. The present new species is distinguished at a glance from the other
knownpterostichinespeciesbyitscharacteristicappearance. Judging from thecon-
figurationofmalegenitalia,itisprobablyrelatedtop.(N)tokejllYosHIDAetTANAKA
foundontheKwantoMountainRange.SuDA(1988,pp 818-819, fig 79) reported
from Minano-machi inSaitamaPrefectureanunnamed Pte1・ostlc・busspecieswitha
photograph. Itseemsalmostidenticalwiththepresentnewspecies.
要 約
1:原須磨生:本州中部の低山地にみられるナガゴミムシ属の2新種. - 本州中部の丘陵と低山に
生息するナガゴミムシ属 Pterostichus の Nia1oe亜属に属する 2新種を記載した.
l) セトナガゴミムシP.(N)taoiは, 愛知県瀬戸市の丘陵地で発見された. 雄交尾器の形態的特
徴からみて明らかにタナカナガゴミムシ種群1alistylisgroupに属するものであるが, 同群中ではき
わだって大型であり, 雄腹板末端節の形態も特徴的である. また, 生態的にも特異で, 被検標本のす
べてが丘陵地にある溜池のほとりに 積した描葉の下から得られている.
2) ムサシナガコ゛ミムシP.(N)musashiensisは, 東京都, 埼玉, 神奈川, 山梨各県の低山地や山

麓部に分布し, 短大で凸隆した体形はきわめて特徴的で, 一見して同亜属の他種と識別できる. 雄交
尾器の形態的特徴から推して, 本種とほほ同様の分布域をもちながら, より標高の高い地に生息する
トケジナガゴミムシP. (N) tokejii YOSHIDAet TANAKA と類縁関係をもつものと考えられる.

fromTonkin and Laos, and knownso far only from thetype localities. Throughthe

specimenof thisspeciescollectedinThailand. HereIwill reportit asanew record from
Thailand.
