Abstract Twonewmo1orchinespeciesbelongingtothegenusEpantaPAscoEare
describedand illustrated from northern Vietnam under the names E kasaha,・al andE.
pa1111oldesspp nov.Theformerspecies,Ekasaha1al,ischaracterizedbysuchaninterme-
diatefaciesbetweenEpaniaandGlaphy1-aasthereticulatesurfacebutunevensidesofthe
pronotumandslightlyshortenedelytra.Alsotherearenocloserelativesamongtheknown
congenersofthegenus.Thelatter,E.pau11oldes,isatypicalspeciesofthegenusandhas
close relationship toE.pau11a PAscoE and E.sa,-av、,ake,Isis (THOMSON), both recorded
fromEastMalaysia.
ThelateMr.SumaoKAsAHARAwasnotonlyanamateurentomologistwellknown
inJapanbutalsooneoftheexcellenttaxonomistsofcarabidbeetles.Hewasalsoa
goodfellowofcoremembersoftheJapaneseSocietyofColeoptero1ogy.Indedicating
thispaperandanewmo1orchinebeetletohismemory,Iwouldliketoexpressmydeep
respectandcondolencetohisdeath.
Inthispaper, Iamgoingtodescribetwonewspeciesofthemo1orchinegenus
Epania fromMt. TamDao,afamousnatureconservationareanearHanoi,northern
Vietnam.0neofthenewspecies,E kasaha1・al,isveryuniqueinshowinganinterme-
diatefaciesbetweenEpanlaandGlaphyra.Rathermanyspeciesshowingsuchanin-
termediaryhavebeenknowninthetwogenera.Aswasnotedinthepreviouspapersof
mine,thegeneraEpaniaandGlaphyracannotbeclearlydistinguishedintheirbasic
morphology (NIlsATo,1986,1992). Theotherspecies,E.pau11oides,hasatypical
habitusofEpanla,andshowsverycloserelationship toE.pau11aPAscoE(1869,p.
568)andE.sarawakensis(THOMSON)(l857,p.124),bothoriginallydescribed from
SarawakofEastMalaysia.Theabbreviationsusedinthedescriptionsarealreadyex-
plainedintherecentpapersofmine(cfNllsATo,2002,p236).

Smallspecies,characterizedbyunevensidesandcloselyreticulatediscofprono-

tum,ratherlongelytronwithanobliquepalespot,andnotsosuddenlyswollenhind
femurwhichhaspalepeduncle.
Male. Colourblackwith faintbluetinge,stronglyshinyingeneral,chocolate
brownatbaseofmesosternum,antennaeandlegsexcept forpaleyellowpedunculate
partofhindfemur;mouthpartsdarkreddishbrown,withblackmandibularapicesand
yellowishbrownpalpi;elytronblack,decoratedwithanobliquepalespotatthemiddle
nearsuturewhichisslightlyproducedexternallyatbase.
Headmoderateandnotexpanded laterally,weaklyconvex,slightlywiderthan
pronotum, densely covered withmedium-sizedpunctures,moderately clothedwith
paleerecthairs, thoughthehairsbecomeyellownearmouthparts,HW/PA 1.09-1.24
(MI.l5),Hw/Pw1.02-1.07(M1.05);fronssubquadrate,slightlyarcuateatsides,al-
attenedthoughslightlydepressedatmiddlenearposteriorpartincludingvertex,

withafinemedianlongitudinal furrowwhichisindistinctaccordingtoindividuals,

puncture denselythoughpartlyclothedwithpalehairs,andalsowithdensesilvery
whitepubescenceat apex ofmetepisternumandbasal marginsof hind coxae. Ab-
domenelongatebarrel-shaped,sparselyprovidedwithsmallpunctures,clothedwith
paleerecthairs,andalsowithdensesilverywhitepubescenceatsidesofventrites1-4
Legsratherslender,moderately long; hind femurweaklyswolleninapical4/7;

wider thanlong,stronglynarrowedtoapexwhichisbluntlypointed.Sternite8trans-
verselyquadrate,withanteriormarginweaklybisinuatenearmiddle,withbluntlypro-
jectedlobesatsides.Medianlobelarge,alittlelessthanahalfthelengthofabdomen,
gentlyarcuateinprofile,distinctlyconvexinapicallobe;dorsalplateslightlynarrowed
totruncateapexwhichexposesshortapicalpartofventralplate;ventralplatestrongly
reflexedatsidesofapicalhalf,arcuatelynarrowedtopointedapexindorsalview;me-
dianstrutsslender,morethan2/3thelengthofmedianlobe. Tegmenalittlelonger
thanahalfthelengthofmedianlobe,slender;paramere3/8thelengthoftegmen,slen-

Notes. Epaniaka.s・aha1・alsp nov. isauniquespeciesinhavingtheintermediate
charactersbetweenEpanlaandGlaphyra. Thepronotumofthisspeciesshowssuch
characteristicstructureofEpanlaasthedistinctlyreticulatediscthoughthesidesare
unevenasinGlaphyra.ThewidethoughnotmuchreducedelytraofE kasahara1sp
alsoshowahybrid formofthetwogenera.Aswassuggestedbymy previous
nov
study,itisdoubtlessthatthetwogeneraformasistergroupinthetribeMo1orchiniina
narrowsense,ormay belongtoamonophyleticgrouphaving very variousexternal
morphology. I previously proposed subgenus, Epanioglaphyra, in the
a genus
Glaphy1,a fortheTaiwanesespecies,G kurosawai, for thereasonofsuchEpanla-1ike
faciesaslargeandvoluminousforebody,stronglytransverseelytra,andsomedetails
ofcharacters.ThissubgenusisatypicalcaseofthehybridforminthegenusGlaphyra
varyingtowards ipama.
Noecological informationofE kasahara1sp hasbeenknown,since three

malesofthetypeserieswereobtainedbylocalpeopleatthevillageonMt.TamDao.

Similar toE.pau11aandE.salawakensis,andnodoubtbelongingtothesamelin-
eagewithinthegenus.Discriminatedfromsuchrelativesbymoreelongatebodywith
longer appendages, largeanddepressedpronotum which is more finely reticulate,
longerandapicallymorenarrowedelytra,andunico1oredbrownishhind femurwithout
palepeduncle.
Female. Colourblackinmostpart,moderatelyshiny;antennaereddishbrown
inbasal foursegments,gradually infuscatetowardsapicalsegments;mouthpartsred-

Prosternumweaklyarcuatelyconvexinprofile,denselyprovidedwithtransverse

num. Metathorax sparsely providedwithsmallpunctures, and rather sparsely pale
haired,beingsupplementedwithdensesilverywhitepubescencealongbasalmargins
ofhindcoxae.Abdomenbarre1-shapecLstronglyarcuateatsides,scatteredwithafew
punctures,clothedwithpaleerecthairs,andalsowithdensesilverywhitepubescence
atsidesofventrites1-2.
Legsrather longandslender;hind femurratherthin,graduallyswolleninapical
half;hindtibiamoderatelyarcuate,distinctlyasperate throughout;tarsi thin,with1st
segmentofhindoneslightlylongerthanthefollowingtwosegmentscombined.

Notes. ItisnodoubtthatthisnewspecieshasacloserelationshiptotheSunda-
1andspecies,E. pau11aPAscoEandE.sarawakensis(THOMSON),at least inexternal
habitus. Thethreespeciessharesmallbutrobustbody,lessvoluminoushead, largely
reticulatepronotumwhichisprovidedwithdistinctpalepubescentbandsnearthebase
andapex,andstronglyreducedelytra.ItisveryinterestingthatE.pau11oldessp
nov.
istheuniquerepresentativeofthegenusfromtheeasternedgeofIndochinaamongthe
samelineageofE.pau11a.Thoughthisnewspeciesisclearlydiscriminated fromthe
two relatives from Sundalan itshould beconsidered to beasiblingspeciesofE.
pau11a.Thetwocloserelativesarebarelydistinguishedfromeachotherbythepuncta-
tionandconformationofthepronotum,thoughquitedifferentintheformoftheelytra
andalsoingeneralcoloration.IhaveexaminedspecimensoftherelativesofE.pau11a
fromthecentralmountainsoftheMalayPeninsulaandJava. ThegroupofE.pau11a
maywidelyoccurinIndochinatoeasternSundaland.
Noecological informationofthisnewspecieshasbeenknown,sinceonly the
holotypefemalewasobtainedbylocalcollectoronMt.TamDao.Thesinglespecimen
examinedmaybecollectedontheflowersofCastanopslssp as in thecaseofother
mo1orchinecerambycidsoccurringonthismountain.
要 約
新里達也:北ベトナムのタムダオ山から発見されたヒメコバネカミキリ属の2新種. - 北
ベトナムのタムダオ山から比較的最近に得られた標本に基づいて, ヒメコバネカミキリ属Epa-
川aの2新種を記破した. このうちの1種は, 体の構造がヒゲナガコバネカミキリ属Glaphy,-aと
ヒメコバネヵミキリ属の中間的な形質状態を示し, いずれに帰属されるべきか判断の難しい種
である. 両属にまたがるこのように雑極的な種はほかにも知られており, この2属が系統的に
おそらくきわめて近緑であることを一菜' 付けてくれる存在として, 注日に値する. また, 本種と
直接に類縁が求められるような既知極の存在は知られていず, 真の系統関係は明らかではない.

なお, 本新種には, 昨年秋に逝去された当学会の功労者である笠原須磨生氏のお名前を献名さ
せてぃただぃて, Ekasaha,・a,と命名した. もう一方の新種は, 典型的なヒメコバネカミキリ属
のもので, 近縁の同属種は東マレーシアのサラワクから記録されているE.pau11aおよびE.
sa,-a、、,ake,,s,sである. このように地理的に非常に離れた地域に近縁種が分布するという事実は
興味深いが, とくに本新種にもっとも近いと推測されるE.pau11aとは形態的分化が浅く, その
インドシナにおける代置種的な存在とみなしてもよい. E.pa,,Ilaの近縁種は, 正式には記録さ
れていないが, マレ一半島中央高地やジャワからも発見されており, これら近縁種群の分布域
は意外にも広いことがうかがえる.
