Trevecca Nazarene University is a fullyaccredited comprehensive institution ofhigher
education located in Nashville,Tennessee. The University offers forty-fourbaccalaureate
and fourassociate degree majors through ten academic departments, fourdivisions, and
fourschools. Master's degrees are awarded in religion, education, management, physician
assistant, libraryand information science, and counselingpsychology.Adoctorate is
awarded in education.WhileTrevecca reaffirms its primarygoal ofeducatingrecenthigh
schoolgraduates, ithas also recognized and assumed responsibilityforprovidinginnova-
tive undergraduate andgraduate programs foradults.
Trevecca's distinctiveness is thatofbeinga holiness institution ofhighereducation
which presents a Christian interpretation oftruth. While the nature ofthe University has
changed some overthe years, its mission to provide quality Christian-centered education,
with an emphasis on the integration offaith and learning, has been maintained. The
name "university" is especiallyappropriate foranyinstitution thatclearly focuses on this
mission.
There are several elements thatare keytoTrevecca's character:
First, teachingis the University's primary responsibility While some faculty are
increasinglyengaged in research,writing, and service projects, theirgreatesttaskis to
teach.
Second, the focus is on a strongliberal arts preparation and aviablegeneral education
program. Today, mostgraduate schools and employers are callingfora moregeneral and
liberallyeducatedgraduate. Trevecca iswell-suited forsuch requests because ithas his-
torically included the liberal arts as partofits mission.
Third, the main concern is in helpingthe individual student. Trevecca is a Christian
community.
Fourth, spiritual life developmentremains atthe core ofits focus. Chapel attendance,
required religion courses, revivals, and the spiritual commitmentofthe faculty and
studentbody are a vital partofUniversity life.

Mission
Trevecca Nazarene University is a Christian communityprovidingeducation forlead-
ership and service.
Purpose
TreveccaNazarene University, founded in 1901 byJ. O. McClurkan, is a private,
accredited, co-educational, comprehensive institution ofhigherlearningthatexists to
meet the highereducational needs ofthe Church ofthe Nazarene. Its academic programs
arebased on Christian values thatpromote scholarship, critical thinking, and meaningful
worship forstudents in preparation forlives ofleadership and service to the church, the
community, and theworld atlarge.
As the official universityofthe Church ofthe Nazarene in the southeastern United
States,Trevecca isguidedbythe doctrines andprinciples forconductofthe denomina-
tion. The school emphasizes the authority ofthe Bible, aswell as the doctrine, experi-
ence, and ethic ofChristian holiness as interpreted bytheWesleyan tradition. The
Universitywelcomes students ofany religious affiliationwho subscribe to its ideals and
standards.
Trevecca intends thatitsgraduates be personswho are developingholisticallyin the
cognitive, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual areas ofbeing. Theyareto be individ-
uals ofstrongChristian characterable to make ethical decisions based on biblical princi-
ples. Theircharacteristics should include competence, responsibility, compassion, and the
abilityto integrate Christian faith and learningin practice. The Universitydesires that
each studentdevelop a personal relationshipwith Jesus Christ.
The University's curricularprograms are focused principally upon traditional under-
graduate education emphasizingboth the liberal arts and sciences as reflected in the core
curriculum and a numberofprofessional contentareas. The University alsoprovides a
varietyofnontraditional and continuingeducation professional programs atthe under-
graduate andgraduate levels.All University programs seekto prepare individuals for
positions ofleadership and service in theirchosen careers.
To achieve its purpose,Trevecca employs faculty, administrators, and staffwho seekto
provide a supportive and challengingenvironmentinwhich every studentcan realize his
orherfull potential in Christ. Therefore, employees mustbe committed Christians who
are professionallyqualified and fullycommitted to the mission and purpose ofthe school.
History
Trevecca Nazarene Universitywas founded in Nashville in 1901 byRev. }. O.
McClurkan as the Literary and BibleTraining School forChristianWorkers. In 1910 the
curriculumwas enlarged and the name changed toTrevecca College, a name taken from
an institution started inWales in 1768 duringtheWesleyan Revival.
In 1914 the Collegewas moved from downtownNashville to a site on Gallatin Road in
EastNashville and in 1935 was established atits presentlocation on Murfreesboro Road
in SoutheastNashville. Trevecca became an official college ofthe Church ofthe
Nazarene in 1917 andgraduated its firstfour-yearclass in 1942. Itwas firstaccredited by
the SouthernAssociation ofColleges and Schools in 1969. The firstmaster's degreewas
added in 1984. The firstdoctoral degreewas added in 1998.
The Universityisgoverned by a board oftrustees elected bythevarious districts ofthe
Church oftheNazarenewhich comprise the SoutheastEducational Region.

Agreed Statement of Belief
The Church ofthe Nazarene believes:

1. In one God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
2. That the Old and NewTestament scriptures, given by plenary inspiration, con-
tain all truth necessary to faith and Christian living.
3. That man is born with a fallen nature and is, therefore, inclined to evil, and that
continually.
4. Thatthe finally impenitent are hopelessly and eternally lost.
5. Thatthe atonementthrough Christis forthewhole human race; and that
whosoever repents and believes on the Lord Jesus Christ is justified and regener-
ated and saved from the dominion ofsin.
6. Thatbelievers are to be sanctifiedwholly, subsequentto regeneration, through
faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
7. That the Holy Spiritbears witness to the newbirth and also to the entire sancti-
fication ofbelievers.
8. That ourLord will return, the deadwill be raised, and the finaljudgmentwill
take place.
Accreditation
Trevecca Nazarene University is accredited bythe Commission on Colleges ofthe
SouthernAssociation ofColleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia
30033-4097; Telephone number404-679-4500) toaward associate's, bachelor's, master's
and doctoral degrees.
Trevecca'sTeacherEducation Program is approved bytheTennessee Board of
Education, and its Graduate PhysicianAssistantProgram is accredited bythe
Accreditation ReviewCommission forPhysicianAssistants (ARC-PA). Trevecca
Nazarene University is also an accredited institutional memberoftheNational
Association ofSchools ofMusic.

General Education Core Curriculum

Purpose ofthe Core Curriculum
Thegeneral education program is central to the educational mission ofTrevecca
Nazarene University. The program arises outofthe conviction thatthe liberal arts are
best understood through a theological situation oflife and learning. The basic assump-
tions ofthegeneral education program reflectthe medieval insightthata mature faith
seeks understanding. Therefore, the program intends toengenderthe kind oflearning
thatwill embodythe Christian intellectual life.Agraduate ofthe program will be
exposed to the broad contours ofhuman knowledgewithin the resources and perspectives
offered by theWesleyan holiness tradition. The core also reflects the intellectual convic-
tionthata meaningful life devoted to leadership and servicewill be mostfullyframed by
an exposure to the literary, artistic, social, and natural perspectiveswithin the contextof
the intellectual heritage ofcritical and creative thoughtassociatedwith the Christian
mind.
Outcome Areas
The program is composed offourtiers, which togetherprepare the studentforacademic
worktoward a specificvocation. The FoundationTierintends toprovide thebasic skills
necessaryfora university education and life longlearning. The Human SciencesTierseeks
tointroduce the studentto thebasic social structures necessaryto a meaningful life. The
Natural SciencesTierintendstogivethe studentan understandingofthe scientific
method, technology, physical and biological sciences, and an appreciation ofthe environ-
ment. The central piece ofthegeneral education program is the ContextsTier. This partof
theprogram is a historically integrated sequence ofcourses thatembrace thebasiccontent
ofa Christian liberal arts education. The program also requires the studenttotake one
unrestrictedgeneral education course. Itis expected thatstudentswill take courses fromthe
general education core overthe entire fouryears.
The learningoutcomes forthegeneral education program areorganized into sixareas.
