This book contains the results of a conference organized at the University of
Messina, Sicily, in June 2012, on the developments in EU legislation in the area
of transnational evidence gathering and the new challenges for a human rights-
oriented model of transborder criminal investigations in the EU. This conference
was organised by my chair of Italian and European criminal procedure at the
DepartmentofLawoftheUniversityofMessinaandwasfoundedbytheUniversity
of Messina, the Assemblea Regionale Siciliana (ARS) and the Bar Council of
Messina,whichIsincerelywishtothankfortheirfinancialsupporttothisinitiative.
Above all, I am very grateful to my colleagues for their contributions to this
book. A particular thanks goes, again, to Springer Verlag and especially to
