Exciting developmentsin crop biotechnology in recent yearshave prompted
thenecessitytoupdatethefirstseriesofTransgenicCropsI,IIandIII,published
in 1999and 2001.In thiscurrent endeavor, 69 chapters have beencompiled,
contributed by a panel of experts in crop biotechnology from 26 countries.
Thesechaptersaregroupedintothreevolumes,namelyTransgenicCropsIV,
V andVI.Thisnewseriesnotonlyreviewsrecentadvancesincellandtissue
cultureandgenetictransformationmethodologies,butalsopresentsaspects
of the molecular genetics of target crops and the practical applications of
transgenic plants. In addition, more than 30% of crop species that were not
discussedpreviouslyareincludedinthepresentseries.
ThisnewseriescommenceswiththevolumeTransgenicCropsIV,consisting
of23chaptersthatfocusoncereals,vegetables,rootcrops,herbsandspices.
SectionIisanintroductorychapterthatplacesintoperspectivetheimpactof
plantbiotechnologyinagriculture.SectionIIfocusesoncereals(rice,wheat,
maize,rye,pearlmillet,barley,oats),whileSectionIIIisdirectedtovegetable
crops (tomato, cucumber, eggplant, lettuce, chickpea, common beans and
cowpeas,carrot,radish).Rootcrops(potato,cassava,sweetpotato,sugarbeet)
areincludedinSectionIV,withherbsandspices(sweetandhotpeppers,onion,
garlicandrelatedspecies,mint)inSectionV.
TransgenicCropsV alsoconsistsof23chaptersinthreesectionsdevotedto
fruit(SectionI),trees(SectionII)andbeveragecrops(SectionIII).Fruitcrops
targetbanana,citrus,mango,papaya,pineapple,watermelon,avocado,grape,
melon,apple,Prunusspp,strawberryandkiwifruit,whiletreesincluderub-
ber,eucalyptus,legumesandconifers.SectionIII,onbeveragecrops,reports
studiesoncoffee,cacao,teaandsugarcane.
AsinvolumesIVandV,TransgenicCropsVIhas23chaptersorganizedinfive
Sections.SectionItargetsoilandfibercrops(soybean,rapeseed,sunflower,oil
palm,peanut,cotton,flax),followedbymedicinallyimportantplants(includ-
ingginseng,opiumpoppy,herbane,bellandonna,Datura,Duboisia,Taxus)in
SectionII.Ornamentals(roses,carnation,chrysanthemum,orchids,gladiolus,
forsythia)arediscussedinSectionIII,whileSectionIVinvolvesforagesand
grains(alfalfa,clovers,tallfescue,ryegrasses,lupin).SectionVhasonechap-
terthatdiscussesaspectsofthefreedomtocommercializetransgenicplants,
togetherwithregulatoryandintellectualpropertyissues.
