The fi eld of colorectal surgery has undergone tremendous developments in recent
decades. Not only have there been exciting developments in surgical techniques
rendering surgery less invasive, but there are also new perspectives and insights into
improving perioperative management, and new outcome measures have been
defi ned. At the same time, more complex patients are challenging the limits of sur-
gical technique and perioperative care. This immense potential for excellent out-
comes in colorectal surgery, however, needs to be reconciled with the need for
coordinated multifaceted care, yet recognizing that resources are limited.
There is, thus, a pressing need for us to streamline our processes and heighten
our clinical productivity in colorectal surgery. To facilitate the delivery of top-
quality seamless surgical care to our patients, there has to be constant improvement
and minimizing of wastages. The different components of health care have to be
integrated in a transdisciplinary fashion. There needs to be excellent communica-
tion and collaboration with constant attention to detail and precision. This should be
done in an environment of constant learning, research, and innovation.
This book discusses in depth the integration of care in colorectal surgery in a
transdisciplinary fashion. After the provision of pertinent background information,
the complexities of current management in colorectal surgery are discussed, fol-
lowed by a description of transdisciplinary care. Subsequent chapters focus on a
range of issues associated with the surgical and perioperative care of colorectal
surgery, with an emphasis on how the multiple facets of care can be integrated
through a transdisciplinary approach. Each chapter provides helpful take-home
messages in bullet point form, and numerous informative fi gures and tables are also
included. The authors are surgeons, physicians, anesthetists, oncologists, and nurs-
ing and allied health professionals with extensive experience in the fi eld.

1.1 Introduction
T he delivery of surgical care has become increasingly complex especially in recent
years. There have been massive developments in surgical options all with more
complex decision-making processes, and thus there is a need for healthcare indi-
viduals to delve deeper into their areas of expertise resulting in subspecialisation.
There is also an increasing dependence on other subspecialists with other domain
expertise in the care of a single patient. Yet there is an overwhelming need for every
patient to be considered as a “whole” and not just in terms of organ systems or
