Another in our series of Town Report covers by local artists...
Rosemary Hildreth was a frequent visitor to Martha’s Vineyard before
moving here permanently in 1991. She has been a highly respected member
of the Oak Bluffs Library staff since 1993, where among other duties, she
spends a good deal of time carefully choosing books for the library
collection.
She uses her limited leisure time to pursue birding and photography.
IN MEMORIAM

GRAND ILLUMINATION
On a joyous evening each mid-August
Oriental paper lanterns
adorn our Tabernacle and cottages
with gaily colored hangings.
A surround of historic tribute.
Teeming throngs of “townies” and tourists
create a festive mood.
All join a vigorous sing-along
of patriotic band renditions.
At dusk the official lighting
by a venerable torch bearer
evokes cheers from the anxious crowd
and cottage lanterns are lit.
Soon the Campground glows.
Strollers view tableaus on porches.
Oak Bluffs gleams as another summer
slips beneath the grandeur.

Oak Bluffs Poet Laureate
Michael Achille served as a Marine during the Korean War, then thanks to the GI bill went on to earn his BS Edu and MS
Edu. He taught for thirty years in Nanuet High School in suburban New York, also coaching Championship Varsity football
and wrestling teams. His proudest moments at Nanuet were serving as the Guidance Director, and many of the students he
helped still stay in contact.
Michael the poet appeared shortly after he moved to the Vineyard. He has been published in several newspapers and has self-
published two books.
He is Oak Bluffs’ first Poet Laureate.
