About the Special Issue Editors
Mostafa Benzaazoua joined the University of Quebec (UQAT) in 1996, as postdoctoral fellow.
He became professor in June 1997 in the same university and held a Canada Research Chair
(CRC 2003–2011) in “mine waste integrated management”. In 2009, he co-chairs an International
Research Chair funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC 2009–2014)
jointlywiththeCRCprogramjointlywithUCAMarrakechUniversity(Morocco). Heispresently
AffiliatedProfessorattheUniversityMohamedIVPolytechniqueinMorocco(UM6P)leadingthe
programofMiningEnvironmentandCircularEconomy. HeisalsoVisitingProfessorattheWuhan
InstituteoftechnologyinChina(WIT).Hehasworkedonlargenumberofgovernment-fundedand
industry-sponsoredprojects,dealingwithappliedmineralogyandgeochemistryforminepollution
control,wastemanagementandvalorization,minesiterehabilitation,andmineralprocessing.Atthe
endof2010,hetookasecondmentandjoinedtheNationalInstituteofAppliedSciencesatLyonin
FranceasaUniversityProfessor,whichallowhimtodiversifyhisresearchthemesworkingonother
industrial mineral waste management, environmental evaluation, treatment and reuse (dredged
sedimentsandsewagesludges,incinerationby-products,etc.).In2012,hereturnedtoUQAT,joining
itsrecentResearchInstituteofMiningandEnvironment. M.Benzaazouaisfamiliarwithvarious
spectroscopicandmicrobeam-basedmineralogicaltechniques,mostmineralprocessingtechniques,
aswellaslabandfieldphysicalmodelingappliedtostudythepollutiongenerationpotentialfrom
mining and industrial wastes before and after treatment/stabilization/valorization. Presently, he
isworkingontheadaptationofCircularEconomy,IndustrialEcologyandGeometallurgytomine
industry.

Preface to ”Towards a Sustainable Management of
Mine Wastes”
Theminingindustrycouldbethesynonymforwealthcreation,goodsproduction,servicesand
infrastructureinsuranceandlifequalityimprovement.However,itcouldalsobetheoriginofmany
harmfulpotentialimpactsonthesurroundingenvironments,causingwater,soilandairpollution.
Mineoperationscontinuouslyproducehugevolumesofminewaste,moreremarkablyinthecase
ofopenpitmining. InthisSpecialIssue,anemphasiswasgiventothemainchallengesfacingthe
mining industry and the need to manage mine waste in sustainable ways. It also presents many
lessonsthatcanbelearnedfrommining’sliabilityandthenumerousabandonedminesitesinmany
places around the world. Different approaches and management strategies have been developed
by researchers from all around the five continents. The papers consider the social, economic,
environmental, and technical aspects of sustainable management of mine waste. The developed
solutionsaregenerallyverysite-specificandaredifficulttoapplyfromsitetositebutcouldinspire
furtherminingdevelopment.
Siteremediation,wastereuseinsituandoutofminesites,andtheevaluationofthepotential
alternativeusesforminingwastearethemostcurrentlycoveredtopics,sincetheyallowthemine
industrytosubscribetothecirculareconomyframeworkandtohaveareducedecologicalfootprint.
Thesustainablemanagementofminingwasteandthecontributionofminewastemanagementto
sustainabilityisanemergingandwidelyexploredresearchfield.Thisresearchareahasconsiderable
potential due to the urgent need for more sustainable practices. Waste management and mine
closureplanningcouldberealizedusingthebestavailablepractices,particularlyifearlierdetection
is conducted, possibly even during the exploration step of the mine lifecycle. In this way, if the
environmentalimpactsofminewastearewellplannedduringtheminedevelopmentphase,andwell
controlledduringtheoperationstep,themineclosurecanbecompletedmoreeasilyandsustainably.
Fourteenresearchpapersintheformofreviews,articles,technicalnotes,andcasestudiesabout
thesustainablemanagementofminewastewerepublishedinthisSpecialIssue. TheUnitedStates,
Canada,Spain,Australia,andChinaarethecountriesthatproducethemostpapersinminewaste
management. We are thankful to all of the authors for sharing their research activities and to all
reviewersforimprovingthequalityofthesubmittedmanuscripts. Theresearchinthefieldhelps
