Applied to Sustainable Supply Chains”
Nowadays,supplychainsandproductionsystemsareglobalizedanddistributedgeographically
aroundtheworld,sincetherawmaterialsforaproductcanbeextractedinonecountry,processedin
asecond,assembledorconvertedintofinalproductinathird,anddistributedandmarketedinother
countries.Duetomaterialandproductsflow,someauthorsindicatethat60%ofthetotalcostofsome
products is associated with the supply chain and logistics, which have the largest environmental
impact. Several researchers have therefore focused on minimizing the costs and environmental
impactsofsupplychainandlogistics.
This book reports a set of tools, methodologies, and techniques that managers are using to
improve the supply chain and that allow them to generate a competitive advantage to retain the
position of their company in the globalized market with low-cost products while being socially
responsible. The15chaptersexplaintheapplicationofthesetools,methodologies,andtechniques
inthesupplychain,illustratingthefocusofmanagersoncostreduction,partnerintegration,useof
informationandcommunicationtechnologies,algorithmsthatoptimizeresources,humanresources
involvement, and information flow among partners. Every chapter reports an application from
varioussectorssuchastheautomotive,aerospace,agricultural,andhealthcareindustries.
Chapter1isentitled“ImplementationofaMathematicalModeltoImproveSustainabilityinthe
HandlingofTransportCostsinaDistributionNetwork”byVelardeetal.Theyreportamathematical
modelusingmixed-integerlinearprogrammingforminimizingcostinthevehicleroutingproblem
from a distribution center to some customers. The model considers different capacities in the
distributionnetworkwithastartingpointforfulfillingeachcustomer’sdemand,thevehiclecarrying
capacity,workschedule,andthesustainableuseofresources. Themodelproposestheamountof
equipmentsuitabletosatisfythedemandandimprovescustomerservice, andoptimizinghuman
andeconomicresources.
In Chapter 2, Lagarda and Leyva report “A Systems Thinking Model to Support Long-Term
Bearability of the Healthcare System: The Case of the Province of Quebec”, an application to the
Canadianhealthcaresystem. Theyintegrateuniversities,hospitals,doctors,theMinistryofHealth
andSocialServicesofQue´bec,andsocietyinadynamicsystemmodeltofindtherelationshipsamong
theseentities,integratingexpertsfromallthem.
In Chapter 3, Miranda-Ackerman et al. report “Green Supplier Selection in the Agro-Food
IndustrywithContractFarming:AMulti-ObjectiveOptimizationApproach”.Theydescribeagenetic
algorithm joined with a multicriteria suppler selection model applied to the agro-food industry,
integratingalifecycleassessment, environmentalcollaborations, andcontractfarmingtoproduce
socialandenvironmentalbenefits.Themaincontributioninthischapteristhatseveralscenariosare
generatedforsharingenvironmentalrisk.
Chapter4isentitled“ALinearProgrammingModelwithFuzzyArcforRouteOptimizationin
theUrbanRoadNetwork”byEscobar-Gomezetal. Theyoutlineafuzzymodelbasedonshortest
pathproblem(SPP)tooptimizeroutedistances,theamountoffuelused,andtraveltimes.Themajor
contribution in this model is that it integrates uncertainty in demand and delivery time and was
appliedtoaMexicancity.
InChapter5,RiveraCadavidetal.report“SupplyChainOptimizationforEnergyCogeneration
UsingSugarcaneCropResidues(SCRs)”withaColombiancasestudyregardingtheincentivesforthe
