TERMS & CONDITIONS: Terms are Cash. All purchases are to be
settled for on sale day, unless prior arrangements have been made.
The cattle sell under the standard terms and conditions as adopted
by the American Angus Association.
HERD HEALTH: All cattle will be accompanied with proper health
certificates for immediate interstate shipment. The herd is certified
and accredited.
SCHEDULE: You are invited to inspect the sale offering anytime prior
to the sale. Please call to arrange a suitable time.
SALE DAY: Cattle will be on display in grass paddocks on the farm.
However, cattle will not be run through a sale ring at the time of sale.
We urge you to come early in order that you have adequate time to
review the sale offering and make your selections. It is recommended
that you take the opportunity to walk through the herd, where you will
find daughters, dams, siblings and several sires of the sale offering.
CONFERENCE CALLING: Will be available on sale day if you are
unable to attend. Please call to make phone arrangements or to request a
video of the sale cattle.

The future is now
As many of you know Sam was on oxygen at the 2013 sale due to his four wheeler
fiasco the week before. It was only with the assistance of Embrook Angus, sale
auctioneer Mark Swope and crew and two neighbors, Jim Reid and Bob Crotts; that
Sherrill retained her sanity, the cattle work was done, new barn yard built and the sale
came off without a hitch. Sam remained on oxygen and pain medication until the first
of January. He is fine now but readily admits that he will never be young again. And,
yes he still rides side saddle. You know the adage, “You can’t teach an old dog new
tricks”…….
Sam and Sherrill have continued to work on their retirement property, and the house
will finally be finished by sale time. They plan to move following their 19th sale this
November. The rail fence surrounding the new house and front pastures survived the
snow last winter without one vehicle crashing into it after five crashes the winter of
2012. The boulders that are now in front of each post may have something to do with
it. The Breezewood property is for sale, but they will continue to keep some cattle
there until it sells. Please note their new address and phone number in this catalog.
They do not wish to lose contact with any of you.
Sherrill’s last day of work as Vice President of Quality Improvement/Risk Management/
Patient Safety at their local hospital was Friday, January 3, 2014. Both she and Sam
have adjusted to this change and Sam is thrilled to have an “official gate opener”. She
enjoys having more time on the farm. This year they did not have one episode of pink
eye in the cattle. Sam says this was the best AI breeding season ever as he did not have
to get up early to breed before Sherrill left for work or after dark when she returned on
late evenings.
Sam continues to indulge Sherrill and Beth on the tanbark trail. Several years ago
Sherrill bought a Guernsey heifer, Bella, that has produced a daughter, Bailey, and this
year delivered a bull calf during the local county fair which was the main attraction in
the dairy barn. Beauford has been retained for breeding purposes. Bella was Grand
Champion at the Maryland State Fair in 2013 and Honorable Mention Senior Champion
in 2014. She was fourth in her class at the All-American show in Harrisburg, PA this
past September and they plan to show her at the Livestock Exposition in Louisville,
KY in November. In keeping with their Angus breeding philosophies, Bella is small in
stature and continues to have a terrific udder and she scored Excellent on 10/14/14.
Beth’s Misty Meadows Guernsey cattle continue to do well on the local and national
show circuit with multiple junior champion heifer and junior best three awards this
year. She won the All-American Junior Best Three Females award in 2013 along with
a Reserve All American and one Honorable Mention. Beth and Chris Reichard work
hard to breed and raise quality Guernseys along with their Octoraro Epiphany Angus
herd.
This fall Sam, along with EM Brook Angus, did some invitro embryo work with
reversed sorted semen through Trans Ova. You will see some of these unique embryos
in the sale offering this year.

Otherwise, you will see few changes to this introduction to Octoraro Angus. A third
generation Angus breeder, Sam has carved a niche in the competitive world of beef
cattle breeding. After serving in Vietnam, Sam traveled throughout the U.S., visiting
Angus breeders, selling semen and doing sale preparation work before starting his
own breeding program in Chester County, PA.
In 1990, Sam moved the cattle to a rugged, 153-acre farm in Mattie, near Breezewood.
The grassy hillsides are ideal for intensive rotational grazing and the woods provide
winter shelter. Hay from neighboring farms supports the 150 head of Angus through
the winters. Seventy to eighty calves are born each year through natural cover and
artificial insemination.
After moving to Bedford County, Sam met Sherrill, a local woman with a Guernsey
dairy background. The first public sale of Octoraro Angus females was in 1994. Sam
and Sherrill married in 1996. They have worked together producing a unique sustainable
herd of pure pedigree Angus cattle.
The Wylies breed cattle from a different angle than most breeders today. The cattle
survive on pasture and hay year-round without supplementation from corn, other grains
or concentrates, and their stock are derived from pure foundation bloodlines. They
value traits, such as maternal efficiency and longevity, which they believe has been
lost in many modern breeding programs that emphasize meat production at the expense
of these characteristics. Sam and Sherrill got back to the basics and raise cattle that
thrive on low-input, sustainable grassland farming. They use minimal fuel and
equipment to process the hay.
Their breeding practices have found a wide market, with their time-tested seed stock
sought by Angus breeders throughout the United States and Canada. They are breeding
producer-friendly cattle for farmers who want to get back to the pure, breeder-type
Angus of long ago. Tallgrass Beef Company Preferred Genetics added Octoraro Angus
to their list of acceptable genetics in 2007. This distinction is attributed to the Octoraro
Angus cattle being bred for maternal efficiency and longevity. In 2008, the Pa. Angus
Association and the Pa. Cattlemen’s Association named them Seed Stock Producer of
the Year.
Years ago Jim Lingle, while at Wye Plantation, mentored Sam, causing him to believe
in the goodness of the Wye maternal program. The Wylies purchased the rare, unique
gene pool of the Newport Farm Wye based cattle in 2005. They have not made radical
changes in these cows, but have bred them to be more consistent and predictable by
utilizing semen from the old time tested Wye bulls. Some of the progeny of these
animals are offered this year. Sam has been fortunate through the years to have some
of the best breeders in the nation mentor him, which instilled in him his values and
goals. His main goal continues to be preserving the maternal goodness and purity of
the Angus breed. This type of disciplined breeding program enables the Wylies to
share both the Wye genetics and their own homebred gene pool. Sam enjoys mentoring
the next generation of breeders.
Years ago, Sam coined the term, Genetic Seed Saver, as the title for their sale. The term
sums up what Octoraro Angus is all about; preserving the original, traditional type of

Angus cattle. They have not perused the modern, high tech, scientific improvement
process that so many have engaged in here in the USA. Sam says that breeding cattle
is an art, which should be used for genetic damage control. They refer to their style of
breeding as pure-breeder type. They do not expect their cattle to be everything to
everybody. They have concentrated on the cow, maternal efficiency and least cost
production, rather than the terminal growth and carcass traits that are often antagonistic
to what they are trying to accomplish.
The Wylies take their job as your seedstock supplier seriously. They do not continuously
outcross their gene pool for bigger, better numbers. Through line breeding and tight
breeding, they feel that they can breed more predictability, consistency and prepotency
into their female lines. With the turmoil surrounding genetic defects in the Angus
breed the past few years, and the possibility of more coming, they are pleased that
there have been no defects found within their gene pool. They believe that their job is
to design and create females that will work for the long haul, up to twenty years of
age. Sam often jokingly states, “There is only one thing we need more of in Angus
cattle and that is more Angus.”
For the sixth year, we welcome consignments from Octoraro Epiphany, New Paris,
PA, and Em Brook Farm, Schellsburg, PA, to our annual sale. These cattle reflect pure
breeder type genetics developed under low input production models. Many of these
cattle descend from cows purchased from Octoraro Angus and continue to carry the
same great bloodlines. We have purchased cattle back, including the 404 cow that
sold to Sinclair Cattle Company for $10,000 six years ago.
Come early on Saturday, November 15, 2014, to view the sale offering of the entire
2010 crop of Octoraro Angus spring calving females, multiple fall calving cows with
calves at side or due shortly after sale day, rare semen and the sexed embryos. Or,
call to make an appointment to view the cattle prior to sale day. This is an excellent set
of cows that are maternal, trouble free foundation genetics. The cattle will not go
through a traditional sale ring. A complimentary lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m.
The sale will start promptly at 12:30 p.m. in the tent. Sam and Sherrill look forward
to welcoming you to their Nineteenth Genetic Seed Saver Sale. The Wylies would

Blue Ridge Cattle Association (BRCA) and Northern Virginia Angus Breeders
combined their annual meetings and provided a good meal, homemade ice cream
and hayrides which were enjoyed by all. The meeting was held in late September at
the Lazy Lane Farm, Upperville, VA. Brother Jim Wylie is their herd manager. All of
the Wylie “boys” except Ed were in attendance.
The Kevin Jenkins family and Sam at the BRCA. We have enjoyed our friendship
with the Jenkins and watching the children grow into young adults.

Octoraro Delia 001 is a top end daughter of the Scottish Dunlouise Jipsey Earl E161 bull.
She is out of our high production Delia 301 cow. 301 was the daughter of our Delia 503 cow
that remained productive all of her life and lived to be 20 years of age. Delia 503 was one
of our foundation pathfinder cows and was sired by Emulation 31. 001 has done an
outstanding job and never missed a beat. She will be weaning an outstanding bull calf that
will be retained for future use in our program. 001 was bred A-I on 7/11/14 to our
impressive Octoraro Emulation 310 bull (12975036) with a clean update of 7/26/14 to our
equally impressive Octoraro Vikulation (17447045).

Octoraro Queen Missie 006 is another top Jipsey Earl daughter out of one of our strongest
cow families. 006 does a very consistent job in our program. She is getting ready to wean
a soggy heifer calf that we will retain. Both the Jipsey Earl daughters raise the fattest calves
in the field either to do with their Scotch influence or butterfat content of milk. 006 has a
service date of 7/7/14 to the grand old Octoraro Emulation 310 bull (12975036). Pasture

Octoraro Delia 010 is an absolutely beautiful daughter of Octoraro Emulation 310. She is
scopey, fancy and attractive in every way including her udder. She is nursing a Vikulation
bull calf that is a little younger than most of this year’s other bull calves, but he is a “comer”
and will without a doubt be sampled in our program. 010 shows an A-I service on 7/9/14 to
the Leonhardt bull, Jad Phylix W 6157 (16389458). Phylix is a linebred, maternal efficiency
type bull and we have high hopes he will enhance the maternal goodness that is already
established in the Octoraro cattle. 010 is certainly the type of cow that we do not like to
part with, but we always offer the entire crop and this is her year to go, if the price is right.

Octoraro Alexina 015 is a beautiful young female, the best of our Wye venture. She is a
direct daughter of Cedric, out of an outstanding Alap daughter that went to Connecticut. 015
is out of the best of our acquired Wye females, the Alexina 8744 Friars daughter. We
thought enough of this cow to include her in our recent IVF program with reverse sorted
semen. Two Alexina 015 IVF frozen heifer embryos, sired by Lodge of Wye, will be offered
in this sale. 015 was serviced A-I to the Baldric of Wye bull (17051426) on 7/10/14. Pasture

Octoraro Miss Wix 017 is a ¾ New Zealand Glanworth Waigroup 130-03 and Pinebank 41/
97 bred cow. 017 is a full sister to the Octoraro Embassy 621 bull that sold to Roy
Brubaker, PA, and was later picked up by Sustainable Genetics in Georgia for A-I service.
This cow comes from a good productive family all the way back. With clean breeding this
is another trouble free cow that has never missed a beat. Bred natural service 7/17/14 to

Octoraro Lottie 018 is a daughter of the Octoraro Embassy 325 bull that we call “Tug”.
Tug’s daughters were sold in the last two sales and were very well accepted as young
cows. This one descends from the Lottie Wye line of cows with a linebred pedigree on the
bottom side that goes back to the Favor of Wye bull. She has done an outstanding job here
and been a very consistent type cow. She has an A-I service of 7/6/14 to the linebred
Shoshone bull, Phylix (16389458). We are very enthused about his ability to transmit
maternal efficiency. We used him heavily this year in our “granny” cows, “keeper” cows
