Pat Bettencourt began working in the Middleborough Public School system
in 1994. She started out as an ESP at the Henry B. Burkland and soon traveled
to the high school in 1995 as an office aide. In 2004, she was promoted to full
time secretary at MHS. In addition to all of the work she has done behind the
scenes, she was also involved in extracurricular activities at the school. When
the Key Club advisor position opened up, Pat was excited to be involved with
students. She enjoyed being a part of the school community and making a
difference. Bettencourt loves being a part of the school and when asked what
her favorite memory from her time at MHS was, she said it was difficult to
choose just one. If she had to narrow it down, she said her favorite memories
are the spirit weeks at MHS because she loves dressing up and having fun
while promoting school pride. She said the energy of the school comes alive
during spirit weeks and there is no better feeling. When asked about one piece
of advice she would leave the students at Middleborough with she replied, “Life is what you make it. It doesn’t
matter what kind of environment you live in, it’s what you make of your life that will count.” Mrs. Bettencourt has
become an integral part of MHS history. Her dedication to the school and its students and her constant presence at
the front desk will be greatly missed when she retires in July. Good luck with all of your future endeavors and enjoy
your well-earned retirement!
Scott Nelson started his career at Middleborough High School as a substitute in
1980 and became a full-time science teacher in April of 1982. During his time
here, he taught many different science classes, including biology, chemistry,
oceanography, environmental science, zoology, and anatomy. Aside from his
job in the classroom, Mr. Nelson served as the Student Council advisor until
1997, class advisor of the classes of 1986 and 1990, and the Silver M advisor.
When his career started, Mr. Nelson was also the advisor of non-traditional club
such as fishing, skiing, and football study. Mr. Nelson has been a football coach
since 1981. He also coached field hockey, girl's basketball, track, ice hockey,
and softball. For the past three years, he has worked as the science department
chair. When asked about his favorite memory at Middleborough High School,
he replied, “When I was a coach on the 1983 Super Bowl winning team, but
there are many special memories”. A piece of advice that Mr. Nelson would
like to leave behind for students at MHS is, “Life is a marathon, not a sprint. Students need to take advantage of
every opportunity that comes their way and never get discouraged.” The past and present students and staff thank
Mr. Nelson for his 37 years of dedication to Middleborough High School and for infusing humor into our school on
a daily basis. Good luck with everything that you do in the future and enjoy your retirement!
Mike Perry officially began his career at Middleborough High School in
1984. For the past 32 years, he has served as a shop intern, a physical
education teacher, a health coordinator, and the Athletic Director. Mr.
Perry coached freshmen, JV, and varsity baseball, girl’s varsity
basketball, freshmen and JV football, cross country, and girls’ and boys’
varsity soccer. Mr. Perry has many favorite memories about his career at
Middleborough High School, some of which include getting hired by
the town that he has lived in his whole life, winning the state title for
baseball in 1997, and trips to Florida with the baseball team. He has also
enjoyed being able to add in health programs at the kindergarten and
middle school, and becoming Middleborough High School’s athletic
I director. Mr. Perry is responsible for successfully making the athletic
program grow by adding teams, improving facilities, and changing sports leagues. When asked to give
students a piece of advice, Mr. Perry said, “You may travel all over the world throughout your life, but
always remember the family, friends, teachers, and others that started you on your journey!” Good luck

Congratulations to the Class of 2017! I hope this class knows
how much it means to me. You have contributed so much to the
culture and climate of our school during your journey at
Middleborough High School. This class has defined what it means to
FinishSTRONG! From your work in the classroom, to the athletic
fields, to the stage and through every activity within our school
community, this class has led with conviction, determination and
Sachem Pride. Throughout every memory that has been created, one
thing is consistent: your love for the Orange and Black. You have
embraced and fostered the meaning of being a Sachem and I could not
be more honored and thankful to be your Principal. You have
challenged me to be a better leader and educator, and I can't thank you
enough for making a difference in the lives of so many. As you leave
Middleborough High School, please know the awesome responsibility
you have to the world around us. Please continue to possess the level
of compassion, commitment and passion that you brought to the
hallways, classrooms, and athletic fields of the high school, and engage this same energy into something you believe
in and something you are passionate about. Never stop learning. This world needs compassionate leaders like you to
help make the world a better place. One of my favorite quotes that I try to live by is from President John F.
Kennedy. It states, “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” If you link your role as a leader and
nurture your appetite to never stop learning you are destined for success beyond compare. Please know, your high
school will be watching you take on the world with pride. Thank you for coming to Middleborough High School
and leaving it a better place than you found it. Now, continue this good work throughout your lives. Always
remember, you have a home in Middleborough and I will always be there for you holding the door open. Best
wishes for an incredible future. You have touched my heart. Class of 2017! I will miss you, your spirit, your energy
and most importantly your commitment to our school.

Dear M.H.S. Class of 2017, Congratulations!
I would like you to know that it has been an incredible honor
and privilege to have served as your Superintendent of Schools
during your junior and senior years as Middleborough Public
School students. As a class, you have developed as “Sachem
Strong” and have distinguished yourselves as positive role
models for countless current and future Middleborough High
School students. You have truly become representative of what
being a “Sachem” is all about. Your energy, enthusiasm,
excellence, and hard work have been evident in the classrooms,
on the stage, on the athletic fields and skating rink, and within
your local and regional communities. Many of you will be
headed off to college, technical school or the United States military,
and many of you may be headed to the workforce. Whatever path you
choose, I am confident that you have been well prepared with the
knowledge and skills necessary to face the next challenge in your lives. As you continue to grow, please know that
you will continue to have the support of your family, friends, school system, and the larger Middleborough
community. Your journey through life awaits you, and along the way you will be presented with many peaks and
valleys. It is my hope that you maintain that all important belief in yourself and your abilities so that you will grow
to become a better person through each of your collective experiences. In closing, and on behalf of the entire
Middleborough Public School system, please accept my heartfelt best wishes to each and every one of you for a
healthy, happy, and successful future. Once a Sachem, always a Sachem.
