ABSTRACT
Tia Askayuli, Oblique Translation of Label Collections at Museum Nasional
Indonesia (National Museum of Indonesia). Thesis: English Letters Department,
Letters and Humanities Faculty, State Islamic University of Syarif Hidayatullah
Jakarta, September 2014.
The purpose of this research is to analyze the oblique translation of label
collections at National Museum of Indonesia which in this case they are applied in
two languages, Indonesian and English. In other words, the objectives of the research
are: (1) to know the types of oblique translation on the selected labels, (2) to analyze
the types of oblique translation that are applied in translating the text on the selected
labels.
The writer uses qualitative descriptive method. She tries to answer the
research question by describing the problem in this research. The writer reads the data
one by one, writes down the sentences that contain the types of oblique translations
and analyzes them by using the Vinay and Darbelnet’s theory.
The result of this research shows that from four types of oblique translation
procedures, which are transposition, modulation, equivalence and adaptation, there
are only three procedures which can be found on the translation of the selected labels,
they are transposition, modulation and adaptation. The translators applied the types of
oblique translation on the selected labels by choosing the words which have the
similar meaning in order to adjust the meaning of words and sentences between SL
text and TL text.
