StenilsLATREILLE(1797)isalargegenusofthesubfamilySteninaeofthe family
Staphylinidae.Atleast2.182speciesofthegenushavehithertobeenknown fromthe
worldand141 fromChina.ThegroupofSte,1usclmlsisaninterestingspecies-group
whichcanbedefinedbythe followingcharacters: body brilliant:abdomenwith long
suberecthairs;paratergitesdeclining,usuallypresentonlyonthe3rdabdominalseg-
ment; legsyellowtoreddishbrown,withthe4thtarsomeresusuallystronglybilobed:
malegenitaliawithmedian lobeobtusely toacutely pointedatapex; spermatheca
stronglysclerotized,andusually curvedtwice.Up tothepresent, 27speciesofthis
grouphavebeendescribedfromtheworld,12fromChina, ll fromJapan3fromViet-
namandone from North India.
Recently,weexaminedanumber ofspecimens from our collection and found
threenewspeciesbelongingtothisspecies-group.Thepurposeofthispaperistode-
scribethesenewspecies.
Stenus(Hypostenus)andoisp nov

Body(Fig.1)smallinsize,length:3.6-4.3mm(fromfrontmarginofheadtoanal
end);1.7-1.9mm(fromfrontmarginofheadtoelytra1apices).
Coloration: - Bodyshiny.Headblack;pronotumandabdomendarkbrown:ely-
trareddishbrown; labrumreddishbrownwithanteriormarginreddishyellow: anten-
nae,maxillarypalpiandlegsreddishyellow.

Pronotum1.03timesaslongaswide,0.83timesaswideaselytra,widestnearthe
middleandconstrictedatbase;puncturesalmost round,different insize,denserand
largerthanthoseonhead,intersticesbetweenthemsmooth.
Elytraaslongaswide,distinctlyconstrictedatbase;lateralmarginsgentlydiver_
9ent posteriad; posterior conjointmargins roundlyanddistinctly emarginateat the
middle; punctures a little smaller and denser than those on pronotum, interstices
smooth.Hindwingsdegenerated.
Abdomencylindrical;paratergitesnarrowandpunctate,presentonlyin3rdseg_
mont,puncturesround,sparse,graduallybecomingsmallerposteriad,eachwithalong
andsuberecthair, intersticesbetweenthemsmooth.

alonganteriormargin;antennae,maxillarypalpiandlegsreddishyellow.

tudinal furrowwhichisabout2/3thelengthofpronotum,anddeepestnearthemiddle;
puncturesrugoseandcon uent,denserthanthoseonhead,intersticessculptured.
Elytra0.96timesaslongaswide,distinctlyconstrictedatbase, lateralmargins
gentlydivergent posteriad; posterior conjointmargins roundlyanddistinctlyemar_
ginateat themiddle;puncturesslightlyoval,diameteraboutaswideasmedialcross_
sectionof2ndantennalsegment,intersticessculptured.Hindwingsdegenerated.

1941 fromSichuanProvince, but canbedistinguished fromthe latter bymuchmore
finelyandsparselypunctateabdomen.ThisnewspeciesisalsosimilartoS falsusL.
BENlcK,1940fromJiangsuProvince,butcanbeeasilydistinguishedfromthelatterby
smallerbody,muchdenserpuncturesontheforebodyandthedifferentsexualcharac-
ters.
Etymology. ThespecificnameisacombinationoftheLatinwords“nlge1'''and
“itus”afteritsblackbody.
