Abstract ThreenewspeciesoftheanthribidgenusMecotropisaredescribedfrom
Southeast Asia under thename of M tlish1,nu・tal (from Thailand), M app1・oxinlatus
(fromPelengIs)andM b・,evict・(fromLuzonIs).
The genus Mecot・topts LAcoRDAIRE comprises thirty-ninespecies of anthribid
beetlesmainlydistributedinSoutheastAsia,includingM.vletname,IsisSENoHrecently
described from North Vietnam.
Recently, through thecourtesyof Messrs. M. NlsHIMURAandS. NAGAI, I was
abletoexaminetwospeciesof MecotroplscollectedfromnorthernThailandandPeleng
Is.,Indonesia. Anadditionalstrangespeciesof thisgenuswascollectedbyme from
LuzonIs.,thePhilippines. Afteracarefulexamination, itbecameapparentthatthese
specieshadnot beendescribedtheretofore. Theywillbenamedinthepresentpaper.

Length:19.2mm(fromapicalmarginofrostrumtoapicesofelytra).
Male. Bodyrelativelyelongate,about3.3timesaslongaswide,includingrostrum.
Colour entirely black. Pubescence dense, pale brown, black and whitish; black
hairsofelytra formingtwosquarepatchesat themiddleofelytra,andanobscure
transversebandbehind themiddle.
Headthick,extendingforwards,parallel-sidedinoccipitalparts,andwithadeep
medianlongitudinalsulcusfrombetweeneyestobasalpartsofantennae;eyesmod-
erately large, rounded, moderately convex above, and moderately approximate to
each other; rostrum thick, graduallywidened in apical three-fourths, widest at the

baseofmandibles,andstronglyemarginateatthemiddleof anteriormargin,andwith
a pair of deep triangular fossae in front of thebasal partsof antennae; maximum
widthofrostrumabout2.8timesaswideastheshortestdistancebetweeneyes. An-
tennaevely1ong, about 2.3 timesaslongasthelengthof body,scapethick, a little
longer thanpedicel insize, proportionsinlength from2ndto11thabout 5:23:26:
37:44:49:45:40:8:12,apicalsegmentsomewhatcurvedandpointed.
Pronotumnearly rectangular, about 1.0 timesaslongaswide, widest at about
middle; discconvex aboveat thecentre;anterior marginnot borderedinmiddle;
dorsaltransversecarinaalmoststraight,slightlytrisinuateatthemiddle,andconnected
witheachlateralcarinaatanobtuseangle,thelatterdeclivousinbasalhalfandhori-
zontallyextendingtothesubapicalpart ofsidemargin;carinuladistinct. Scutellum
relativelylargeand linguiform. Elytrarelativelylongand thick, about 19timesas
longaswide, parallel-sided inbasal three-fourths, thennarrowedposteriorly,basal
marginalmoststraight;stria1puncturesverysmall,distancebetweenthemaswide

asthewidthsofintervals; intervalsflat;subbasalswellingsweak. Pygidiumsubtrap_
eZOida1,vertical,about l.2timesaswideaslong,lateralmarginsreexed,andgradual_

Prosternumwithadeeptransversesulcusin frontofcoxal cavities;mesosterna1
processlinguiform;metasternumwithadeeptransversesulcusin frontofeach coxal
cavity,andwithadeepsemicircularfossainfrontofintercoxa1part;1st to4thvjsjble
sternites, viewed from side, conjointly almost horizontal, 5th somewhat slantjng.

another;anterior tibialonger thanthemedianwhichisalittlelonger thanthepos-
terior;anteriortarsuslongerthanthemedianwhichisdistinctlylongerthanthepos-
terior.
Female. Unknown.
Holotype , Doi Pui, ChiangMal Prov., NW Thailand, 5~25-VI-1988. The
holotypeisdepositedinthecollectionof theNationalScienceMuseum(Nat.Hist),
Tokyo.

Nlotes. In general appearance, this species resembles Mecotropls c,・assico11is
JORDAN, 1903, known fromSumatraandBorneo,butcanbedistinguished fromthe
latter by thenarrow pronotum and elongateelytra. Thespecificname isgiven in
honourofMr. Masatoshi NlsHIMuRAwhoofferedthevaluablespecimenformystudy.

Length: 16.0mm(fromapicalmarginofrostrumtoapexofpygidium).
Female. Body relatively slender, about 3.6 times as longas wide, including
rostrum and pygidium. Colour entirely black. Pubescence dense, black and pale
yellowish; paleyellowishhairsof pronotumformingalinear patchat themiddleand
twopairsoflongitudinalonesatthesides;blackhairsofpygidium「ormingatriangular
patch.
Headslender,andwithadeeplongitudinalsulcus fromvertex tobasal partsof
antennae; eyes large, strongly convex above, emarginate in anterior margin, and
strongly approximate to each other; rostrum slender, thick, gradually widened in
apicalthree-fourths,widestatthebasesofmandibles,andstronglyemarginateat the
middleofanteriormargin;maximumwidthofrostrumabout4.8timesaswideasthe
shortest distance between eyes. Antennaeshort, extendingbarelybeyond thebasal
margin of elytra, proportions in length from 1st to 11th about 16: 11: 25: 27: 30:
30:29:27:27:23:38,apicalsegmentsomewhatcurvedandpointed.
Pronotum barrel-shaped, co nvex above, as long as wide, widest at the
middle; dorsal transversecarina arcuate, closest toposterior marginat themiddle,
and roundlyconnectedwitheach lateral carina, the latter horizontallyextending to
the subapical part of side margin; carinula obscure. Scutellum oblong. Elytra

oblongand thick,about l.8timesaslongaswide, parallel-sidedinbasal two-thirds,
thennarrowedposteriorly;strialpuncturesverysmall,distancebetweenthemaswide
asthewidths of intervals, whichare flat;subbasal swellings weak. Pygidium lin-
guiform, extendingbackwards, nearly as longas wide; lateral margins gradually
convergenttowardsbroadlyroundedapex;discslightlyswollen.
Mesosternal process linguiform, gradually narrowed towards rounded apex;
1st to4thvisiblesternites,viewedfromside,weaklyarcuateconjointly,5thextending
backwards. Legslongand thin;anterior femuralittleshorter thanthemedianwhich
isdistinctlyshorter thantheposterior;anterior tibiadistinctlylongerthanthemedian
whichislonger thantheposterior;anteriortarsusalittlelongerthanthemedianwhich
islonger than theposterior.
Male. Unknown.

Length: 18.0mm(fromapicalmarginofrostrumtoapicesofelytra).
Male. Bodythick,about2.9timesaslongaswide,including rostrum. ColOu「
entjrely black. pubescence dense, pale yellowish and black; black hairs of elyt「a
formjngmanyroundpatchesvariableinsize. Pygidiumwithacordatepatchat the
centreandapairoflinearonesat thesidesinbasalhalf.
Headthjck,withadeeplongitudinalsulcusfrombetweeneyestobasalpa「St of
antennae;eyesmoderatelylarge,hemispherical,moderatelyconvexabove,andmod-

Pronotum somewhat barrel-shaped,convexabove, about 1.0 timesas longas
wide,widest atbasal two-fifths;disclongitudinallydepressedandsomewhatswollen
at thecentre;dorsal transversecarinabroadlyrounded,androundlyconnectedwith
eachlateral carina, thelattersomewhat declivous,extendingbeyondthemiddleof
sidemargin; carinula obscure. Scutellum rectangular. Elytra oblong and thick,
about 16 times as longas wide, parallel-sided in basal two-thirds, then narrowed
posteriorly;stria1puncturessmallbutdistinct,distancebetweenthemshortinapical
halvesofelytra, theirdiameterbeingdistinctlysmaller than the widths of intervals.
Pygidium linguiform,vertical,nearlyaslongaswide;lateralmarginsgraduallycon-
vergenttowardsbroadlyroundedapex;discsomewhatswollenatthecentre.
Prosternumwithatriangularpresternalprocess;mesosterna1processlinguiform,
wide;1st to4th visiblesternites, viewed fromside, weakly arcuateconjointly, 5th
somewhatslanting. Legslongandthin;anteriorfemurshorter thanthemedianwhich
isnearlyaslongastheposterior;anteriortibiadistinctlylongerthanthemedianwhich
is longer than theposterior; anterior tarsusnearly as longasthemedianwhichis
longerthantheposterior.

Notes. Ingeneralappearance,thisspeciesresemblesMecot・,opispardalisJORDAN,
1913,describedfromCelebes,butcanbedistinguishedfromthelatterbythefollowing
antennalcharacteristics:short,about14timesaslongasbody;lackingawhitering
ineachsegment;10th,11thandapicalthirdof9thformingaslenderclub.
要 約
l?-尾俊男:東南アジアから発見されたMecotropis属(ヒrナガゾウムシ科)の3新種. - 手許に
ある東南アジア産のMeCOtrOPis属のヒ7ナガソ'ウムシ類を調べたところ,新種と思われるものを3
種発見したので, タイ国北部から得られた重llに対してMecotropisnishimuraiSENoH, インドネシア
のぺレン島からのものに M aPProximatusSENOH, フィリピンのルソン島からのものに M bro、・jor
SENoH と命名し記4文; した.
