Introduction
“There is no theory of the lyric in the way that there is a theory of the drama or the narra-
tive” (Warning 17f., our translation). This claim, from 1997, demonstrates clearly one of
the great paradoxes of modern literary theory. Despite the fact that for the last thirty years
we have witnessed a search for well-founded theories, for the lyric (i.e. approximately one
third of the entire textual corpus, if one follows Warning in addressing the traditional trio of
genres) there is neither a generally accepted and comprehensive definition nor a differenti-
ated toolkit for analysis.
A number of fundamental assumptions, which define the everyday as much as the pro-
fessional approach to poetry, seem to be responsible for the peculiar position of the genre.
In the first place, poetry counts as the epitome of the literary, as a pure artefact and ‘quin-
tessential speech’. Nowhere else is the linguistic medium so consistently forced beyond its
communicative limits, and nowhere else does form so firmly refuse to be monopolised by
reference. Poetry’s prevailing “priority of the linguistic form” (Adorno 85, our translation),
its particularly high degree of ‘poeticity’, is the reason why the poetic genre is frequently
turned into a prototypical example of a linguistic artefact and (often for the first and last
time) extensively discussed in introductory literature courses.
Poetry is also deemed the one genre that most stubbornly defies the cold rationality of
scholarly analysis. The ‘real’ expert tends to approach it carefully, full of respect towards
the superior genius of the poet and with the aid of a venerable methodological apparatus
that, for the most part, goes back to Roman antiquity. This may be a polemically overdrawn
prelude to the investigation of a complex field, yet there is more than a mere kernel of truth
in this sketch of a conspicuously emotional engagement of readers with the poetic genre.
Anyone who has participated in poetry readings, poetry workshops or scholarly conferences
on poetry will confirm this diagnosis. The self-styling of the poet, the readers’ cult of gen-
ius, the empathetic identification of many lyric critics with the lyric persona as well as the
openly displayed disdain of professional colleagues from other disciplines have their causes
here.
It is the archaic myth of divine inspiration and the ancient notion of a poet being driven
by furor poeticus (‘poetic frenzy’) which are largely responsible for the intuitive and irra-
tional aura still attached to poetryat the beginning of the twenty-first century. The assump-
tion that both the production and reception of poetry are terrains reserved for the emotions
has further roots in the philosophy of German idealism, in the theoretical writings of the
Romantic poets and in the closely related genre conceptualisation of literary theorists such
as Matthew Arnold, Wilhelm Dilthey, Emil Staiger, A. E. Housman, Northrop Fry or Cecil
D. Lewis.
The concept of poetry’s formal self-sufficiency and heightened self-referentiality looks
back to a similarly long tradition, taking as its starting point the ancient form of an instru-
ment-accompanied lyric and Aristotle's cursory mention of the dithyramb. The remarkable
theories of Gerard Manley Hopkins, who in a short 1865 essay anticipates the fundamental
statements of structuralist poetry, constitute a further major step in the development of a

formal model of the lyric: “The artificial part of poetry [...] reduces itself to the principle of
parallelism” (Hopkins 80). With the description of the poetic function, Russian formalism
finally fixed the increased self-referentiality of linguistic artefacts as an intrinsic character-
istic of poetic speech (cf. Jakobson 558).
What effects do these notions of the emotionality and heightened artificiality of the po-
etic genre have on the concrete analysis of poetic texts? What categories have been devel-
oped by modern poetic theory in order to come to terms with the specific characteristics of
the genre, and to what extent do they rely on insights from modern literary and cultural
theories? It is obvious that the emphasis upon pre-conscious elements in the creation and
reception of poetic texts is not beneficial to an unbiased, objective scholarly engagement. In
fact, even today it is a characteristic of many theoretical studies of lyric poetry that they
tend toward an emotionally marked ‘poetic diction’ that seeks to emulate the style of the
primary text. The assumption that a text is born out of genuine emotion leads to an equation
of the situation staged in the text with the biography of the real-life poet and to a neglect of
the ontological gulf which separates the author and the fictional lyric persona.
The emphasis upon the autonomy of the poetic artefact has had the result that, along
with biographical or general philosophical considerations, the internal textual patterning has
become the central object of exegesis. The study of supra-segmental patterns, phoneme
equivalents, syntactic recurrences and metaphoric structures constitutes the central interest
of an analysis that draws on categories from ancient rhetoric as a primary frame of refer-
ence. While with the ‘emotional school’ of lyric criticism the concentration is on the life of
the author or reader, for the formalist approach the non-referential interplay of phenomena
within the text becomes a focus of contemplation. What is missing is attention to the
speech-dependence and fictionality of what is evoked as well as the systematic investiga-
tion of poetry’s cultural performance and its potential as a social, political, economic and
psychological tool.
From what has been said, it becomes clear that the practice of lyric analysis within the
disciplines of modern literary and cultural studies is following a notably anachronistic path
(with the exception of Hosek’s 1985 collection of poststructuralist studies on the genre).
While, for example, narratology at the beginning of the twenty-first century can rely upon a
sizeable corpus of internationally recognised and widely applied theoretical frames of refer-
ence, ‘modern’ poetry theory forms an enclave far from the influences of mainstream liter-
ary theory and still works with axioms derived basically from post-Romantic conceptions of
genre and reception, though perhaps in a more developed and differentiated form. The re-
sults are a failure to make use of the findings of modern linguistic, literary and cultural
theory, an impressionistic and evaluative procedure of analysis, and a terminological plural-
ism that defies constructive academic debate. It is, therefore, high time to lift the theory of
poetry to a level that corresponds to the level of reflection in modern literary studies by
means of a transfer of theories from related fields.
All of the contributors to this volume ‘theorise’ the lyric to overcome the impasse of an
impressionistic and narrowly formalistic critical debate on the genre. To provide a better
survey, the papers have been grouped into four sections, since they focus on a variety of

different questions ranging from the problem of establishing a framework for definition and
classification and the search for dynamic and potent critical approaches to an investigation
of the social and psychological potential inherent in poetry. Not surprisingly, postmodern
poetry, with its delight in experiment and its keen awareness of and response to contempo-
rary critical theory, has attracted the interest of several scholars, so that a whole section of
the book is devoted to the issue. That papers should occasionally overlap in the questions
addressed was not only unavoidable but was indeed a desired effect, showing that an ap-
proach to poetry grounded in theory does not foreclose discussion but opens up new and
exciting vistas.
If at the beginning of the theory-conscious twenty-first century an entire genre has been
left under-defined and its exegesis appears to be operating almost entirely without generally
recognised generic models and analytic categories, this is, to a very important degree, also
owing to the deficiencies of general genre theory. The introductory contribution of the sec-
tion ‘Defining the Lyric’ by Werner Wolf deals with the traditional generic triad and the
aporias surrounding its deconstruction. Wolf does not share the pessimistic view of some
critics as to the impossibility of an adequate description of the poetic genre. While, accord-
ing to his study, we will have to say goodbye to the ideal of a trans-historical, regulated
system of genres, this does not inevitably result in the categorical rejection of the entire
discipline of genre theory. Instead, Wolf’s essay makes clear that not only must every work
enter nolens volens into a dialogue with genre conventions but also that the reader’s knowl-
edge of genre norms constitutes an important part of the recipient’s communicative compe-
tence. In place of a universal structure of order, Wolf emphasises the reader’s aesthetic
competence, which can be conceptualised with the aid of a Wittgensteinian model of family
similarity as suggested by the studies of Ryan and Müller-Zettelmann. Texts which the
recipient recognises as belonging to the ‘family of poetry’ evince particular characteristics;
these characteristics of the generic multi-component model do not exist a priori, nor are
they either genre-distinctive, or historically unchanging, or conclusively connected caus-
ally; yet in their polymorphous totality they construct an equally polymorphous poetic
genre. After establishing this genre-theoretical foundation Wolf proceeds to devise a defini-
tion of the poetic according to these guidelines, by filling in the content of the multi-
component model.
Sabine Coelsch-Foisner, who takes recent philosophical models of self-creation as a
starting point of a semantic-phenomenological reordering of poetic texts, chooses an alter-
native entryway to the problems of genre. Starting from the hypothesis that an excessive
concern with schools, movements and literary trends has generated maps of English poetry
from which important poets have been effectively effaced, her contribution presents and
puts into practice a new typology of categories (ethos – mode – voice) for reading and con-
textualising poetry in terms of ideas, currents of thought and aesthetic conventions. ‘Ethos’
constitutes a self – world relation, a bundle of ideas, beliefs and attitudes. Each type of
ethos is subdivided into a varying number of ‘modes’ to reflect the particular forms in
which it may be expressed in different cultural situations. The modes are, in their turn,
subdivided into distinct ‘voices’ corresponding to the way in which individual poets handle
them in their work. The idea underlying this typology is the concept of poetic consciousness
– a concept that, as Coelsch-Foisner persuasively demonstrates, should be re-examined
