This document presents a new measure of work values called the Work Values questionnaire (WVal). The WVal is based on Schwartz's theory of 10 basic personal values and measures how important each value is to respondents in the work context. It was administered to 759 employees across 94 organizations. Confirmatory factor analysis showed the 10 work values have adequate distinctiveness and reliability. Multidimensional scaling also replicated the circular motivational structure of relations among the values found in Schwartz's theory. The study found differences in work value importance associated with gender, age, tenure, and role. The WVal provides a validated measure of work values grounded in a comprehensive theoretical framework.
