Contributors
Peter Beilharz is Professor of Sociology and Director of the Thesis Eleven Centre for
Cultural Sociology at La Trobe University, Australia. He is past Professor of
Australian Studies and William Dean Howells Fellow at Harvard and is a Fellow in
Cultural Sociology at Yale. He is author or editor of 23 books, most recently
Socialism and Modernity (2009). He has published six books on the work of
Zygmunt Bauman, and is collecting his essays for a seventh volume. Work in progress
includes the intellectual biography of the founding mother of Australian sociology,
Jean Martin; a study of Australian modernity in the twentieth century; and a col-
laborative project on the history of rock music in Australia.
Christopher G. A. Bryant is Emeritus Professor of Sociology in the Faculty of Arts,
Media and Social Sciences at the University of Salford, UK, and an Academician of
the Social Sciences. He is the author of Sociology in Action (1976), Positivism in
Social Theory and Research (1985), Practical Sociology: Post-empiricism and the
Reconstruction of Theory and Application (1995), and The Nations of Britain
(2006), and the co-editor of six other books. Three of these, Giddens’ Theory of
Structuration (1991), Anthony Giddens: Critical Assessments (4 vols, 1997) and
The Contemporary Giddens (2001) are with David Jary. In addition to social theory,
he has research interests in political sociology. His latest research is on the recon-
figuration of Britain.
Ian Buchanan is Professor of Critical and Cultural Theory at Cardiff University. He
is the author of The Dictionary of Critical Theory (OUP, 2010) and the founding
editor of the journal Deleuze Studies.
Craig Calhoun is President of the Social Science Research Council and University
Professor of Social Sciences at NYU. He received his doctorate from Oxford University
and he has also been a professor at the University of North Carolina and Columbia
University as well as a visiting professor in Asmara, Beijing, Khartoum, Oslo, and
Paris. Calhoun’s most recent book is Nations Matter: Culture, History, and the

Cosmopolitan Dream (2007). He has also edited Lessons of Empire: Historical
Contexts for Understanding America’s Global Power (with F. Cooper and K. Moore,
2006), Sociology in America (Chicago, 2007), Knowledge Matters: The Public
Mission of the Research University (with Diana Rhoten, forthcoming) and antholo-
gies of both classical and contemporary social theory (new editions, Blackwell, 2011).
Among his best-known earlier books are Critical Social Theory: Culture, History
and the Problem of Specificity (Blackwell, 1995) and Neither Gods Nor Emperors:
Students and the Struggle for Democracy in China (California, 1994). His new book,
Cosmopolitanism and Belonging, will appear from Routledge this fall.
Marie L. Campbell is Professor Emerita from the University of Victoria, Canada,
where she was a member of the Faculty of Human and Social Development.
Institutional ethnography has inspired all her teaching, research, and publications.
Her most recent book is Managing to Nurse: Inside Canada’s Health Care Reform,
co-authored with Janet Rankin, and published in 2006 by University of Toronto
Press. Since retirement, she has taught at the American University-Central Asia in
Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and with Elena Kim from AUCA, conducted an institutional
ethnography on the discursive organization of international development in
Kyrgyzstan. The first publication from this research, co-authored with Katherine
Teghtsoonian, is published in Signs: A Journal of Women in Culture and Society, in
the Summer 2010 issue.
Christopher Chase-Dunn is a Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Director of
the Institute for Research on World-Systems at the University of California, Riverside.
He is the author of Rise and Demise: Comparing World-Systems (with Thomas D.
Hall), The Wintu and Their Neighbors (with Kelly Mann) and The Spiral of Capitalism
and Socialism (with Terry Boswell). He is the founder and former editor of the Journal
of World-Systems Research. Chase-Dunn is currently doing research on global party
formation and antisystemic social movements. He also studies the rise and fall of set-
tlements and polities since the Stone Age and global state formation.
Charles Crothers is Professor of Sociology in the Department of Social Sciences at
AUT University, Auckland after previously serving as a Professor of Sociology at the
University of Natal, Durban, South Africa. Prior to this, Charles had lectured in the
Departments of Sociology at the University of Auckland, and Victoria University
and had been President of the New Zealand Sociological Association and Secretary
and currently Vice-Chair of the History of Sociology Research Committee of the
International Sociological Association. His research interests cover Sociological/
Social Theory (especially the analytical theories in the work of Robert K. Merton,
and to develop a robust conceptualization of social structure), Social Research
Methodology/methods, Sociology of Science and Social Science (especially the
Columbia Tradition of Sociology, national sociologies, and most broadly compara-
tive patterns in world sociology and organization of social research) and Studies of
New Zealand (and other settler societies) and Auckland.
Karen S. Cook is the Ray Lyman Wilbur Professor and Chair of Sociology at Stanford
University. She is also the Director of the Institute for Research in the Social Sciences

(IRiSS) at Stanford. Professor Cook has a long-standing interest in social exchange,
social networks, bargaining, and social justice and is currently involved in a large
interdisciplinary project focusing on trust in social relations. She has edited a number
of books in the Russell Sage Foundation Trust Series including Trust in Society
(2001), Trust and Distrust in Organizations (with R. Kramer, 2004), Whom can you
Trust? (2009), and eTrust: Forming Relations in the Online World (with C. Snijders,
V. Buskens, and C. Cheshire, 2009). She is co-author of Cooperation without Trust?
(with R. Hardin and M. Levi, 2005). She was elected to the National Academy of
Sciences in 2007 and in 2004 she received the ASA Cooley Mead Award for Career
Contributions to Social Psychology.
Marjorie L. DeVault is Professor of Sociology in the Maxwell School of Citizenship
and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. Her research focuses on gender and
work, including unpaid household and family work, and she has written exten-
sively on qualitative and feminist research methodologies, especially institutional
ethnography. She is the author of Feeding the Family: The Social Organization of
Caring as Gendered Work and Liberating Method: Feminism and Social Research,
and editor of People at Work: Life, Power, and Social Inclusion in the New
Economy.
Kanishka Goonewardena was trained as an architect in Sri Lanka and is Director,
Program in Planning, Department of Geography, University of Toronto, where he
teaches urban design and critical theory. He is co-editor of Space, Difference,
Everyday Life: Reading Henri Lefebvre (Routledge, 2008) and has written in both
popular venues and academic journals such as Radical History Review, Review of
Radical Political Economics, Antipode: A Radical Journal of Geography,
International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, Planning Theory, New
Formations, Theory and Event and the publications of INURA (International
Network of Urban Research and Action). The Social Science and Humanities
Research Council (Canada) funded his book manuscript in progress, National
Ideology in Sri Lanka: A Question Concerning Technology, Modernity, and the
West? He is also working on a study of the appropriations of critical theory in urban
studies entitled The Future of Planning at the End of History.
Hiroko Inoue is a PhD candidate in the Sociology Department at University of
California-Riverside. Her research interests are sociological theory, world-systems
analysis, formal modeling, ecological analysis, sociocultural evolution, and social
network analysis. She is also a research associate at the Institute for Research on
World-Systems at UCR helping to conduct several research projects. The research
topics that she has been involved in are: the growth/decline phases of cities, states,
and empires, globalization, global state formation, and the world-systems analysis
on the Internet. Her publications include: “Global State Formation and Global

David Jary is Visiting Research Professor at the Centre for Higher Education Research
and Information (CHERI) at the Open University, and he holds an Emeritus
Professorship at Staffordshire University, where he was previously Dean of the
Graduate School. Between 2001 and 2005 he was a Visiting Professor at the Higher
Education Academy Subject Centre for Sociology, Anthropology and Politics based
at the University of Birmingham. He has published widely on social theory and his
writing on contemporary social theory includes a number of volumes on the work of
Anthony Giddens (with Chris Bryant), including The Contemporary Giddens –
Social Theory in a Globalizing Age (2001). His recent volume on higher education
is Improving What Is Learned at University (2010). He is editor of the Collins
Dictionary of Sociology and also an editor of the journal Widening Participation
and Lifelong Learning.
Guillermina Jasso (PhD, Johns Hopkins University) is Silver Professor and Professor
of Sociology at New York University. Her main research interests are basic theory
and international migration, together with inequality, probability distributions, and
factorial survey methods, topics on which she has published widely, including such
articles as “How Much Injustice Is There in the World?” “A New Unified Theory of
Sociobehavioral Forces,” “Two Types of Inequality,” “Two New Distributions,”
“Estimating the Previous Illegal Experience of New Legal Immigrants,” and “How
Many Highly Skilled Persons Are Waiting in Line for U.S. Legal Permanent
Residence?” She is currently Co-Principal Investigator of The New Immigrant
Survey. She was a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences
and is an elected member/fellow of the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars, the
Sociological Research Association, and the American Association for the Advancement
of Science.
Douglas Kellner is George Kneller Chair in the Philosophy of Education at UCLA
and is author of many books on social theory, politics, history, and culture, including
Critical Theory, Marxism, and Modernity and Jean Baudrillard: From Marxism to
Postmodernism and Beyond; works in cultural studies such as Media Culture and
Media Spectacle; a trilogy of books on postmodern theory with Steve Best; and a
trilogy of books on the media and the Bush administration, encompassing Grand
Theft 2000, From 9/11 to Terror War, and Media Spectacle and the Crisis of
Democracy. Kellner’s Guys and Guns Amok: Domestic Terrorism and School
Shootings from the Oklahoma City Bombings to the Virginia Tech Massacre won
the 2008 AESA award as the best book on education. In 2010, Kellner published
with Blackwell Cinema Wars: Hollywood Film and Politics in the Bush-Cheney Era.

Richard Kilminster is Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Leeds, where
he also gained his PhD under Zygmunt Bauman in 1976, having previously studied
sociology at the Universities of Essex and Leicester. He has written many articles on
the sociology of knowledge and the work of Norbert Elias in particular. In the 1980s
he worked with Elias at the University of Bielefeld and in Amsterdam and edited his
last major work, The Symbol Theory, in 1991. He is author of Praxis and Method:
A Sociological Dialogue with Lukács, Gramsci and the Early Frankfurt School
