Acknowledgments
This book, and everything else I have written on temples and on the
Temple had their genesis in a course titled “Early Oriental History,”
taught by Professor Hugh W. Nibley at Brigham Young University in the
Fall of . From that day to the present, very few days go by without
my feeling the influence, the example, and the force of Hugh Nibley’s
scholarship and personality. Only a slightly less forceful impact on me
comes from my teacher at the University of Michigan, Professor George E.
Mendenhall, whose influence only began in . In addition to Pro-
fessor Mendenhall, I was deeply influenced by Professor David Noel
Freedman at the University of Michigan, and, at Brigham Young Univer-
sity, by Professor Truman G. Madsen, who gave me my second publishing
opportunity for a temple-themed article in . Additionally, I enjoyed
many memorable talks with Dr. Raphael Patai in New York City in the
years before his death. His writings, ideas, personality and his encourage-
ment of me have had a deep impact on me.
