During the break, Sydney’s major theatres released their of(cid:29)icial seasons for the New Year.
2012 will see Sydney’s theatre scene continue to introduce us to brand new Aussie work, but
will also re-introduce us to some classic works that have been neglected in past years. Here
are some upcoming shows that have got me more than a little excited for next year.

Pygmalion
The Sydney Theatre Co. will dust off Bernard Shaw’s original tale of a (cid:29)lower girl’s ascent into
high society. Jessica Marais plays the iconic role that has inspired actresses from Julie An-
drews to Julia Roberts.

Les Liaisons Dangereuses
Hugo Weaving and Pamela Rabe star in this STC’s interpretation of the deliciously wicked
18th Century classic by Choderlos de Laclos. The tale of sexual espionage and social destruc-
tion bears new relevance in today’s culture of internet gossip and salacious online rumour.

Australia Day
This new play by Jonathan Biggins tackles the topical and often misunderstood issue of Aus-
tralia’s national identity set on the country’s annual day of celebration. The play follows four
individuals on the day, commenting on racism, political correctness, social taboos and carbon

This year, Belvoir St Theatre tackles Arthur Miller’s most famous piece, often named the
