WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump says
he’ll deliver a detailed speech Wednesday on
his proposal to crack down on illegal immigra-
tion — but it’s anyone’s guess what he will say.
The announcement came late Sunday in a
tweet by the Republican presidential nomi-
nee after days of wavering — and at least one
canceled speech — on a question central to his
campaign: Whether he would, as he said in
November, use a “deportation force” to eject
the estimated 11 million people in the U.S. ille-
gally.
Trailing Democrat Hillary Clinton in many
key states 10 weeks before the election, Trump
is trying to win over moderate Republicans,
some of whom have been turned off by his
rhetoric on immigration and other issues. But
any significant shift could disappoint his core

Scientists exit Hawaii

Mars simulation
HILO, Hawaii (AP) — Six scientists have complet-
ed a yearlong Mars simulation in Hawaii, where
they lived in a dome in near isolation.
For the past year, the group in the dome on a
Mauna Loa mountain could go outside only while
wearing spacesuits.
On Sunday, the simulation ended, and the scien-
tists emerged.
Cyprien Verseux, a crew member from France,
said the simulation shows a mission to Mars can
succeed.
“I can give you my personal impression which is
that a mission to Mars in the close future is real-
istic. I think the technological and psychological
obstacles can be overcome,” Verseux said.
Christiane Heinicke, a crew member from
Germany, said the scientists were able to find their
own water in a dry climate.
“Showing that it works, you can actually get
water from the ground that is seemingly dry. It
would work on Mars and the implication is that you
would be able to get water on Mars from this little
greenhouse construct,” she said.

out the yellow flag. Larson had the
better restart and went on to win by
1.48 seconds.

Larson secured a spot in the Chase
for the Sprint Cup with two races left

the Chase field on points if need be.
It was the 99th career start for
the 24-year-old Larson, who had 14
top-five finishes before Sunday but
hadn’t won at the Cup level. The
20-year-old Elliott is winless in 29
starts, but this was an impressive
showing for him after eight consecu-
tive races outside the top 10.

in June as well, losing to Joey
Logano.
“That’s a couple races in a row in
just a few short months here at this
place we had a really good car, had
an opportunity,” Elliott said. “That’s
one thing I try really hard to do is
make the most of opportunities when

Elliott led by 2.86 seconds with 28
laps to go Sunday, and it looked as
if Larson’s chance to catch him had
been derailed when he lost ground

a race-high 41 laps. Logano, the pole
winner, finished 10th.
