THE SECOND KRISHNAMURTI READER
Krishnamurti was born in south India ofBrahmin parents. In 1911,
at the age of fifteen, he was brought to England by Mrs Annie
Besant. He was educated privately over here and was groomed for
the role ofWorld Teacher, but in 1929 he disbanded the organiz-
ation which had proclaimed him and ofwhich he was the head, and
declared that hedid not wantdisciples. He then travelled ceaselessly
all over the world giving public talks and private interviews. The
essence of his teaching is that only through a complete change of
heartin theindividual can there come aboutachangeinsociety and
so peace to the world. He believed that this radical change could
take place in every individual, not gradually but instantaneously.
He tried to help us see ourselves as we really are, for it is in seeing
with absolute clarity that the inward revolution takes place. Krish-
namurti died in 1986.
