workshopsandresearchconferences.Sheistheauthorofseveralarti-
clesandtwobooksonleadership,medical-surgicalnursing,andteach-
ing strategies.
Madonna C. Stack, MA, MPA, RN, received her bachelor’s degree
from the University of Pennsylvania, a master’s degree in medical-
surgical nursing and nursing administration, and a master’s degree in
public administration in the health care administration program at
New York University. She has had experience in critical care, staff
development,andcontinuingeducationasaninstructor,clinician,and
manager. In addition, she has had extensive experience in executive-
levelnursingandhospitaladministrationpositionsinlargemetropoli-
tan teaching hospitals in New York City. Ms. Stack is currently an
independent health care consultant.
Ms.Stackhasservedinleadershiprolesinanumberofprofessional
organizations,hasbeenapresenteratnumerousnationalconferences,
and hasauthored articleson criticalcare nursing, nursingadministra-
tion,andhealthcare,andatextbookoncoronaryarterybypasssurgery.

Barbara Stevens Barnum, PhD, RN, FAAN, a former editor of
both Nursing Leadership Forum and Nursing & Healthcare, is pres-
ently a writer and consultant. She previously served in positions
atbothColumbiaUniversityprogramsofnursing(MedicalCenter
and Teachers College), including holding the directorship, and
Division of Health Services, Sciences, and Education at Teachers
College,whereshealsoheldtheStewartChairandChairmanship
intheDepartmentofNursingEducation.Dr.Barnumhaswritten
widely in areas of nursing management, theory, education, and
aspects of spirituality/holistic nursing. Her books include Nursing

AnneE.Belcher,PhD,RN,AOCN,FAAN,isSeniorAssociate
Dean for Academic Affairs at Johns Hopkins University School
of Nursing. She has more than 35 years of experience in nursing
education,havingtaughtatthebaccalaureate,masters,anddoctoral
levels. She has held numerous academic administrative positions,
including Director of the Undergraduate Program at Thomas
Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA, just prior to joining the
facultyatJohnsHopkins.Dr.Belcher’sareaofexpertiseisoncology
nursingandherresearchinterestispsychosocialaspectsofcancer,
with a focus on spiritual care. Dr. Belcher holds a bachelor of
scienceinnursingfromtheUniversityofNorthCarolina,amaster
ofnursingdegreefromtheUniversityofWashington,Seattle,and
adoctoratefromtheFloridaStateUniversity,Tallahassee.Sheisan
AdvancedOncologyCertifiedNurseandaFellowintheAmerican

Linda R. Conover EdD, MS, RN, received a BSN from St.
Anselm College, Manchester, NH, an MS in Community Health

Administration from Vanderbilt University. She is the Director
of Distance Nursing Education Programs (RN-BSN, RN-MSN,
andMSN)atSaintJoseph’sCollegeofMaineinStandish,Maine.
Her areas of teaching and expertise are Community Health and
Population Focused Practice Nursing, curriculum, and teaching.
She consults widely in areas related to nursing education.
Marilyn Hecker, MA, MS, RN, received a bachelor’s degree in
nursing from Adelphi University, a master’s degree in education
from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a master’s de-
gree in nursing administration from Adelphi University. She is
currently Vice President of staff development at Metropolitan
Jewish Health System in Brooklyn, New York. Ms. Hecker has
worked in home care for many years on Long Island, and in
New York City as a clinician and educator, and has successfully
implemented a preceptorship program in her current position.
Janet Mackin, EdD, RN, is currently the Dean of both Long
IslandCollegeHospitalSchoolofNursingandPhillipsBethIsrael
School of Nursing in New York City. Dr. Mackin has had a wide
varietyofeducationalexperiencesasastaffdevelopmentinstructor,
director of nursing education, and executive director of training.
SheearnedherdoctoraldegreeintheAEGISProgramatTeachers
College, Columbia University.
SusanWileyNesbitt,MA,MPA,PhD,istheVicePresidentfor
theDivisionofGraduateandProfessionalStudiesatSaintJoseph’s
Collegein Maine.Shereceived bothherMPA andPhD fromthe
Robert Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York
University. Her recent publications are in the field of Adult and
Distance Education and Learning. She has also published in the
area of Health Care Finance.
Ann M. O’Mara, PhD, RN, received her bachelor’s degree in
nursing from the State University of New York at Buffalo, her
master’sdegreeinnursingfromCatholicUniversity,Washington,
DC, and her doctorate in adult and higher education from the
University of Maryland, College Park. Dr. O’Mara is currently
ProgramDirectorattheNationalCancerInstitute,NationalInsti-
tutesofHealth,andmanagestheportfolioofinvestigator-initiated

research in the areas of symptom management, and palliative and
end-of-life care. Prior to this position, she was on the faculty of
the University of Maryland School of Nursing where she coordi-
nated the clinical practicum for senior undergraduate students.
Her publications have been in the areas of rewarding staff nurse
preceptors, designing and evaluating clinical learning experiences
in hospice and end-of-life care, and oncology nursing.
Carmen D. Schmidt, MSN, RN, is Director of Nursing Educa-
tion and Research for Beth Israel Medical Center and St. Luke’s-
RooseveltHospitalinNewYorkCity.Ms.Schmidtisresponsible
for nursing education, orientation, preceptor training programs,
andhousewidein-serviceprograms.SheholdsanMSNinMedical
Surgical Nursing from Adelphi University.
Deborah Wright Shpritz, PhD, RN, received her diploma in
nursing from the Maryland General Hospital School of Nursing,
Baltimore, her bachelor’s degree in nursing and master’s degree
in nursing education from the University of Maryland, School of
Nursing,Baltimore,andherdoctorateinCurriculumTheoryand
DevelopmentfromtheUniversityofMaryland,CollegePark.She
hasmorethan20yearsexperienceinacademia,workingwithboth
undergraduate and graduate students in precepted and nonpre-
cepted courses. Currently she is Program Director for Palliative
CareEducationattheUniversityofMaryland,SchoolofMedicine,
whereshecoordinatesthejuniormedicalstudentrotationinHos-
pice and Palliative Care and has developed an online course in
End-of-LifeCareformedicalresidents.SheisalsoAdjunctFaculty
at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. Her recent publications
are in the area of education, palliative care, and neuroscience
nursing.
