The editors would like to acknowledge a number of individuals and institutions
whose help and support have been invaluable in the conception and completion
of this volume. We thank the contributors, who have been very patient and help-
ful throughout the process of putting together this volume, in the face of many
rounds of revisions and demands on their time from the editors. As editors, we
have been fortunate to work alongside the contributors from our initial inquiries
and theoretical meanderings, and we have been delighted to see how those ex-
changes of initial ideas and outlines led to the formulation of chapters that en-
hance our knowledge and understanding of the features and purposes of unity
and division techniques, as they are manifested in a wide range of Greek and Ro-
man texts and contexts.
Many of the contributions to this volume were given as papers at the interna-
tional conference, “The Rhetoric of (dis)unity: Community and division in Greco-
Roman prose and poetry”, which was held at the National and Kapodistrian Uni-
versity of Athens, 23–24 November 2017. That conference generated stimulating
discussions of papers that formed the basis of many of the chapters included in
this volume, as well as several other excellent papers that are not included here.
We are grateful to all the participants, including those not represented in the vol-
ume: Brenda Griffith-Williams, Cristina Rosillo-Lopez, Ilias Arnaoutoglou, Maria
