I owe a great debt of gratitude to the prolific reviver of ancient texts Najib Mayel Heravi, who
published the book translated here, Raw(cid:1738) al- arwā(cid:1738), thirty years ago and sent me a copy at that
time. When I looked it over, I realized that it was an extraordinary discovery, and I soon wrote
an article trying to suggest its riches. I also made good use of it in my recent study Divine Love.
Various people exposed to translated excerpts have asked me why I did not translate the whole
text—a question I often asked myself. Finally, in 2013, I proposed a translation to the John
Simon Guggenheim Foundation and was awarded a generous fellowship for the academic year
2014–15. Without the fifteen months of concentrated study that the fellowship made possible,
