The Rare First Plantin Edition of Seneca
Classical Literature/ Printing History. LUCIUS ANNAEUS SENECA. Tragoedias
decem[...].Antverpiae, ex officina Christophori Plantini, 1576. Seneca's ten
tragedies, of which Octavia and likely Hercules Oetaeus were written by oth-
ers. Text by Martin DelRio (1551-1608), a Jesuit theologian and scholar, as stat-
ed on the title page. Octavo (7x9)
The first edition of Seneca's Tragedies from the renowned Plantin Press at Ant-
werp. Christophe Plantin (c.1520-1589), born in France, came to Antwerp in
1548. The quality of his work as a bookbinder brought him into contact with
nobility and wealth. His most important work is considered to be the Biblia
Regia (King's Bible), also known as the Plantin Polyglot Bible. The work was fin-
ished in five years (1569–1573) running to 8 volumes. In November 1576 – the
same year Plantin's Seneca was printed-- the Spaniards plundered and burned
Antwerp essentially ending its supremacy as the commercial center and richest
city of Europe. Plantin's publishing establishment, however, continued to pros-
per under Spanish rule.
This copy is in its original elaborate, embossed pigskin binding with four raised
bands. Both binding and text (aside from expected age-related toning) are in
superior condition. Withdrawn library copy with shelf number at the base of
the spine and Breslau Library stamp on title page. Numerous contemporane-
ous manuscript annotations, neatly done and probably by a student, and a po-
em on the front endpaper, which is a transcription from the text. Three manu-
script ownership signatures, dated 1726 (possibly the annotator), 1750, and
1902.
This edition scarce on the market with only a few auction records, all for inferi-
or copies.

Sponsored by the NRA and first reprinted by Odysseus Edition (beginning in 1995) and then by
Palladium Press. The “Library” consists of previously issued books about firearms, all bound in
ribbed leather bindings with gilt decoration, ribbon markers, and with all edges gilt.
Of the 133 titles published to date, we have 38 for sale (37 of which are from the first 40 titles
issued) [see the list below]. All are in near-fine to new condition (some still shrink-wrapped), ex-
cept for one, which has a repaired hinge. (All published titles are out of print, except for the most
recent three.)

Salvador Dali. Dali: A Study of his Art-in-Jewels:
The Collection of the Owen Cheatham Foun-
dation. Greenwich,CT: New York Graphic
Society (1959). A fine, extra-illustrated copy,
in a slightly soiled slipcase. The colophon
notes that this is #81 of 100 copies signed by
the artist. Dali’s signature, along with the
date “1959,” appears on the lower corner of
the front free endpaper.
Bound into the book are color photographs
of 28 “jewels” with comments and captions
written by Dali. Loosely laid in are photos
and Dali’s descriptions of three additional
jewels, numbered 29, 30, and 31, which were
completed after the book was published. In
addition, there is a ribbon-tied catalog (5 ½ x
8 ½ ) of the original exhibition, also with #29
-31 in reduced size.

Art and Culture; Part I (1900-1950) and Part II (1950-2000).
New York: Norton (1999) This two-volume set is the catalogue for a two-part exhibition that
represented the best works of the last century, as shown at the Whitney Museum of American
Art.
A rather common title but a one-of-a-kind edition. This edition is bound in full leather in a
custom slipcase. In correspondence with both Norton (which published the cloth version) and
the Whitney (paperback edition), both organizations had no knowledge of this leather-bound
set. Norton suggested it was a probably a presentation rebind. As Part I is a second printing
and Part II is a first, that is probably the case. The reason, we believe, is that publication (as
acknowledged on the copyright page) was made possible by a gift from Edwin and Susan Mal-
loy, both Westport residents. This book came from the estate of Susan Malloy, an artist in her
own right, who died in 2015. $500
Leo and Diane Dillon. To Every Thing There Is a Season.
New York: Scholastic/Blue Sky Press (1998). No. X (10?) of 150 specially
bound first-edition copies, signed by both authors in a pictorial slipcase,
both in fine condition.
Leo (1933–2012) and Diane Dillon worked together for more than 50
years as illustrators and artists. They won the Caldecott Medal in both
1976 and 1977, the only consecutive winners of the award. $180

R(uth). Prawer Jhabvala. Esmond in India.
New York: W. W. Norton (1958). First edition of her third novel in an unclipped, edge-
chipped dust jacket. Book in very good condition with some top-edge and paperclip stains.
Signed copy inscribed to “Worth Hedden from Ruth Jhabvala, August ’58.”
Worth Hedden (1898-1985), a Southern-born novelist and a one-time Westport resident,
wrote the 1947 novel The Other Room, which won the Southern Authors Award for the most
distinguished book of the year by a Southern author on a Southern subject, and an Anisfield-
Wolfe Award as one of the best books on race relations.
Jhabvala herself is know for her longtime collaboration with Merchant Ivory Films. She is the
only writer to have won both a Booker Prize (for her Heat and Dust) and the Academy Award
in 1986 for Room with a View and in 1992 for Howard’s End.
Included is a handwritten, signed aerogramme sent from Delhi by Jhabvala to Hedden in July
1958. Among the subjects, the letter thanks Hedden for sending her The Other Room, which
Jhabvala has read and discusses. An important combination of book and letter. $250

London: Michael Joseph (1984). Labeled on the rear flap of the dust
jacket: Uncorrected Proof Copy: Provisional Publication Date 26 March
1984. Published the next year in the United States and titled, Hollywood
Revisited: A Fiftieth Anniversary Celebration.
This copy has special provenance. It belonged to Sheilah Graham and
she has marked up both the dust jacket and book . It comes with a hand
-printed one-page unsigned statement discussing changes to be made
in the American edition. (Hand-printed because, as she writes, “My
typewriter is out of order.”).As she lived in Westport from 1959-1961,
she likely gave it to another resident and eventually it was donated to
the Westport Library.
For F. Scott Fitzgerald fans, the book has 18 index entries, plus one pic-
ture of Fitzgerald and her. Belongs next to the Fitzgerald first editions on any library bookshelf.

with all edges gilt. Very good condition with slight wear on the edges and front outside hinge.
With 21 tissue-protected steel-engraved plates from drawings by David Roberts. Also has ten

Firenze (Florence): Leonardo Ciardetti, 1830. Five volumes, complete. An
Italian edition of the complete works of Dante, with commentary by Baldas-
sare Lombardi. Frontispiece (Vol. I) engraved portrait of Dante, and three
engraved plates corresponding to each of the three domains of the afterlife
(in Vols. I-III). Period binding in Quarter-leather and marbled boards. Minor
soiling to bindings, especially the leather, which is quite dry and flaking. I
internally very good with some light water staining in Volume III. $175

John Steinbeck. The Log from the Sea of Cortez.
New York: Viking, 1951. First edition in very good condition with the spine
and cover titling still bright and unfaded. The dust jacket, though not price-
clipped, has condition issues, including edge chips and some small missing
pieces, though it protected from further damage in a mylar sleeve.
Much of the book was originally published in 1941; after co-author Ed Rick-
etts's death in 1948, Steinbeck wrote a tribute to him published in the
"Log," which also includes the narrative part of the 1941 book. $100
Fred Polhemus. Arthur Shilstone: A Lifetime of Drawing & Painting.
East Hartford: Tide-mark Press (2015). Limited first edition, this is #
72 of 100 copies signed by both the artist and the author. Includes a
signed, numbered print, "Fishing Below the Flume," produced from
Shilstone's original watercolor. Still in print, this copy is unique, as it
also inscribed "for Howard [Munce] who knows a thing or two about
making pictures. With best wishes, Arthur Shilstone, 2015."
After serving in the 603rd Camouflage Engineers (which specialized
in deceiving the Germans through special effects and deploying regi-
ments of inflatable rubber 93-pound M4 tanks), Arthur Shilstone
went on to a long and prominent career as an illustrator. His work
has appeared in more than 30 magazines, including National Geographic, Life, Sports Illustrated

The War of the Rebellion: a Compilation of the Official Records of the Un-
ion and Confederate Armies.
Originally issued in four series totaling 128 volumes. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Official_Records_of_the_American_Civil_War). The sale has 14 volumes (numbers: --
---) from Series I – Military Operations. Each volume is in ¾ leather with the name,
“John C. Speaks” imprinted at the bottom of the back strip. John Speaks (1859-1945)
was born in Ohio, He served as member of the Ohio National Guard for more than
forty years, advancing from private to brigadier general. During the Spanish–
American War, Speaks participated in the Puerto Rican campaign. He commanded
brigades on the Mexican Border in 1916 and during the First World War. He later was
elected a representative to Congress and served from 1921 to 1931. Condition rang-
es from fair to good. The volumes are individually priced, from $5 to $15

Clarence John Laughlin. Ghosts Along the Mississippi:
An Essay in the Poetic Interpretation of Louisiana's Plantation Architecture. New York :
Scribner, 1948. Signed first edition without a dust jacket, in good condition except for edge
wear on the covers, particularly along the top.
Laughlin has been called the first true surrealist American photographer in the United
States and his images are often nostalgic, reflecting the influence of Eugene Atget. This is
his best-known book and has been reprinted by other publishers, American Legacy in 1961
and Bonanza in 1988. $275
[Anna]Lady Brassey. A Voyage in the Sunbeam: Our Home on the Ocean
for Eleven Months.
London: Longmans, Green, 1884. First published in 1878, this copy was rebound in full blue
morocco with five raised bands as a school presentation gift. All edges gilt with
marbled endpapers.
Front cover is embossed with the seal of Leamington College [Warwickshire, Eng-
land], which reads, “From the arms of the college with honor". In the center is the
college motto, "Perseverence". A book plate on the front pastedown reads:
"Francis F. Lambarde/from the examiners/Among the worthy for the honor of DD/
from Leamington College/So it is confirmed . Joseph Wood, DD/on Aug 7
MDCCCLXXXV”
In excellent condition with a colored foldout map at the rear. $130
LithOpinion. A complete run, issues 1-39, from 1966 to 1975.
Mostly in very good condition with cover wear on some issues. Published quarterly by Lo-
cal One of the Amalgamated Lithographers of America, LithOpinion became a showcase
for graphic arts and public opinion. Early issues had contributions by Victor Borges, Elmo
Roper, Peter Drucker, Robert F. Kennedy, Barry Goldwater, Isaac Asimov, William O. Doug-
las, Tomi Ungerer, Jean Shepherd.. .and that’s only the first dozen issues! An important,
though unappreciated, journal of America in the turbulent Vietnam era. The set, $100

Ron Chernow. Alexander Hamilton.
New York: New York: Penguin Press, 2004. The inspiration for the Pulitzer-Prize winning musi-
cal of the same name, this is a signed first edition in near-fine condition in an unclipped dust
jacket. Chernow’s undated signature on the title page was affixed on May 26, when he spoke
at the Westport Library’s annual “Booked for the Evening” benefit. (In addition to this title,
Chernow also signed other titles, all of which will be at the sale.) $125
Amedee Ozenfant. Foundations of Modern Art.
New York: Dover (1952). First published in France in 1928, this is the new, augmented Ameri-
can first edition. In very good condition in a good, chipped and unclipped dust jacket. Signed
on the free endpaper, “Ozenfant.”
Ozenfant was a French Cubist painter and writer who founded the Purist movement, along
with Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, later know as Le Corbusier. $100
Boardman Robinson. Cartoons of the War.
New York: E.P. Dutton (1915). Signed and inscribed, “To Weed, In appreciative expectation of a
speedy return in kind. Boardman Robinson, Nov.5.” “Weed” is probably Weed Clive (1884-
1936), a fellow artist and fellow traveler. Both were published in “The Liberator” magazine.
Robinson (1876-1952) returned from World War I and these cartoons reflect his ”deep convic-
tion that Germany is chiefly to blame for the war.” Included in the book is his iconic cartoon,
“Belgium: The Return of the Goth, ” depicting a rampaging German soldier devastating Bel-
gium. $100
Brendan Behan. Brendan Behan’s Island: An Irish Sketch-book.
Bernard Geis Associates (1962). First edition in near-fine condition in a very good, unclipped
dust jacket. Signed by Behan on the title page and artist Paul Hogarth on the portrait frontis-
piece . $120
James Branch Cabell. The Storisende Edition of the Works of
James Branch Cabell.
New York: Robert McBride, 1927-1930. Set number 1,292 (of 2,590). Generally in
very good condition, though some volumes have wear and tear at the spine ends.
Complete in 18 top-edge gilt volumes, each one with an Author’s Note by Cabell,
who was still in his early 50’s when the set was published. Originally planned as a
19-volume set, according to an inserted sales prospectus, the planned Volume 17 --
The Witch Woman -- was not published until 1948. $150

George Sarton. Introduction to the History of Science.
Baltimore: Williams & Wilkins, 1927, 1931, 1947, 1948. Published as
three volumes in five books (Vol. I. From Homer to Omar Khayyam;
Vol.II. From Rabbi Ben Ezra to Roger Bacon, parts. 1-2; and Vol. III. Sci-
ence and learning in the fourteenth-century, parts 1–2. 1927–48.) All
are scarce first editions of a title that has been reprinted many times.
Condition varies from just good to very good; two of the early volumes
are splitting at the hinges, not surprising as each is three inches thick.
Included is a handwritten signed letter, dated Dec. 20, 1932 to a Mr.
Rogers that, among other things, transmits 15 copies of the original pro-
gram of Isis. (Isis was established in Ghent, Belgium in 1912 by Sarton and is the official publi-
cation of the History of Science Society.) Based on handwritten notes in one of the books, Mr.
Rogers is probably W.S. Rogers, Director of the Institute of Current World Affairs.
Sarton’s other claim to fame is as the father of writer May Sarton. $150

New York: Scribner, 1940. First edition of this rather scarce book, lacking the dust jacket.
The book is in decent condition showing the normal wear of having been read. There is a
one-inch piece missing from the top edge of the half-title and the impression of a long-
gone paper clip. $80
Havelock Ellis. Studies in the Psychology of Sex.
Philadelphia: F. A. Davis 1926, 1927). In the publisher’s statement: “Complete in
Six Volumes….each volume is complete in itself; sold in Sets or Single Volumes.”
Except for Volume VI, “Sex in Relation to Society,” published in 1927, the first five
volumes are 1926. Brown cloth in very good condition.
A seventh volume, “Eonism and other Supplementary Studies,” published sepa-
rately in 1928, is not part of this set. $120
Morten Andersen. Fast City.
Oslo, Norway, 1999. Small soft-covered book with card covers. This is the Norwegian-born An-
dersen’s first book, self-published in an edition of 1,200 copies with 58 photos.
In Andersen’s own words, “Since 1999, the photobook has been my main medium for showing
my work. Since then I have made and published 12 books….Common for all my work, the moti-
vation for photographing comes from curiosity and the desire to explore and investigate places
and environments - be it the Oslo underground rock scene, Norwegian forests, my own neigh-
borhood, or international cities. ” $150
The Young Lady's Book of Classical Letters: Consisting of Epistolary Selections.
Philadelphia: Desilver, Thomas & Co., 1836. An anonymous book by the author of The Young Man’s
Own Book. A small (3.5x5.25) volume, all edges gilt in an embossed leather binding, both front and
back (see picture). In very good condition. Identical to the one shown in Google Books, which used a
New York Public Library copy (books.google.com/books/about/
The_Young_Lady_s_Book_of_Classical_Lette.html?id=KqoCAAAAYAAJ) The only other copies that ap-
pear are all facsimile reprints. So the book is rare, but if it is valuable is for you to determine. $100

Frederic Wertham. Seduction of the Innocent
New York: Rinehart (1954). First edition in very good condition in an unclipped, lightly soiled
dust jacket. This is an expurgated copy, with the two-page bibliography that should be on pag-
es 399-400 cut out of the book, leaving a stub as evidence of the excision. The table of con-
tents, however, shows a “Bibliographical Note” as starting page 399.
A word of explanation: In his book, Wertham warned that comic books were a negative form
of popular literature and a serious cause of juvenile delinquency. The book was taken seriously
at the time, and was a minor bestseller that created alarm in parents. At the same time,
a Congressional inquiry was launched into the comic book industry. Subsequent to the publica-
tion of Seduction, the Comics Code Authority was voluntarily established by publishers to self-
censor their titles.
The story lives on in a website, www.LostSoti.org, which helps identify comics mentioned in
the book. It also reproduces the Bibliographical Note that was excised because the publisher
feared legal action, as it listed the publishers of the comics mentioned in the book. $85
Albert Payson Terhune. Wonder Women in History.
London: Cassell, 1918. First and probably only edition and published just in the UK with a lim-
ited distribution. In good condition with cover wear and a weak rear hinge. All eight full-page
photogravures present.
Terhune was an American author, dog breeder, and best known for his novels relating to the
adventures of his beloved collies. His first dog title, Lad, A Dog, was published one year later, in
1919. $75
P. M. Bardi. The Tropical Gardens of Burle Marx.
New York: Reinhold (1964). First American edition in an unclipped, though chipped dust
jacket that is missing small front-panel piece and has taped repairs, Unclear if the front free
endpaper was carefully excised or never present. However, pasted down to the inside front
cover is a short signed letter from Marx, "To Jean White, my friendship and admiration,
Roberto Burle Marx, Rio, 1968."
Marx (1909-1994) was a Brazilian landscape architect (as well as a painter, print maker,
ecologist, naturalist, artist and musician) whose designs of parks and gardens made him
world famous. He is accredited with having introduced modernist landscape architecture to
Brazil. $140

the backstrip.) First issue, with the typo: "for the failure of my life" in the last sentence of the

New York: Modern Library (1934). First edition with a new, six-page introduction by Fitzgerald
and dedicated “Once again to Zelda.” In very good condition, lacking the dust jacket. $90

New York: Scribner, 1929. First edition, first state without the disclaimer on page x. And, of
course, without the valuable dust jacket.
Two copies, neither one perfect. Both slightly cocked. $60 each
Gabriel Garcia Marquez. One Hundred Years of Solitude. New York: Har-
per& Row (1970). A very good copy in an unclipped dust jacket in very good condition. Stat-
ed First Edition but it is actually the second printing, as evidenced by the rear number line,
which ends in “2”. The dust jacket is, however, a first edition ($7.95 price), with a “.” rather

1953 in Gloucester, Mass.. Contains poems by Denise Levertov, Robert Creeley, and Cid Cor-
man. Also includes two poems by Charles Olson, one of which may be the first appearance of
what was included in his master work, “The Maximus Poems.“ $60

NY: Farrar Straus Giroux (1985). Very good condition, third printing, in a like, unclipped dust
jacket. Inscribed, “For Allegra, Philip, June 1, 1992.” No question, based on Internet checking,
that it is signed by Roth. But who is Allegra? Allegra Goodman, a Jewish American writer who,
along with Roth, was in Ted Solotaroff’s The Schocken Book of Contemporary Jewish Fiction”?
Or Allegra Kent, the dancer, who said that Roth, after reading her Water Beauty Book, begged
for extra water wings, “which I sent to him.” $80
