As this Fourth Edition of the is based on the Third Edition
(as that was on the First), the editor of the Third Edition wishes to
leave on record his gratitude to all those whose contributions to that
work are still virtually incorporated in the present volume. Chief
among these, of course, is Robert Bridges, the first editor: to him
no adequate tribute can be paid. Charles Williams, the second editor,
boldly enlarged the Hopkins' s canon and introduced a firmer note of
editorial appreciation. The still larger Third Edition owed much to
the late Humphry House, who had aroused a wider interest in the

early poems and fragments by printing many of them in
books and Papers of (1937),

Access to original MSS. and permission to use copyright material

then custodian of the MSS. lodged at Amen House. The Welsh
poems could not have been edited without the expert assistance of
