Preface
The spirit and joy of music making hardly knows a more intimate setting than that
of chamber music. That the piano would become an important instrument in such
ensembles should not be surprising considering the role the harpsichord had taken
before the piano’s invention around 1700. Composers, performers, amateurs, and
music lovers alike have enjoyed the rich and seemingly endless variety expressed
through chamber ensembles. Even no less a figure than the imminent physicist
Albert Einstein, known for his skill as a violinist and his love of chamber music,
felt compelled to proclaim, “If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musi-
cian.” In many ways, it has been chamber music that has truly given composers
the vehicle to express some of their most intimate thoughts.
In the original edition of this volume, Maurice Hinson noted that some of the
most glorious literature written for the piano is found in the chamber music rep-
ertoire. Indeed, throughout the centuries composers have used chamber music to
express their most intensely personal ideas. Surely Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven
gave Western culture some of their most sublime thoughts clothed in this medium,
and contemporary composers are also using it for many of their most exciting ex-
pressions and avant-garde experiments.
One might assume that this new edition would be concerned primarily with
music composed since the previous edition some fifteen years ago. And while it
takes the reader into the first two decades of the twenty-first century, many of the
new entries include composers from previous centuries as well. In all, more than
fourteen hundred new entries of compositions are included, composed by more
than three hundred new composers.
This third edition of The Piano in Chamber Ensemble embraces the format and
plan of earlier editions in its identification of chamber music with piano. Key ques-
tions have been retained and addressed with each new entry: What is there? What
is it like? Where can I obtain it? A certain amount of subjectivity is unavoidable
in a book of this nature, but the authors have attempted to be as fair and objec-
tive as possible. Because the chamber music field is enormous, certain criteria had
to be followed to make this volume manageable: (1) The listing includes compo-
sitions requiring no more than eight instruments (including piano). (2) The time
span covered is mainly from 1700 to the present, but a few works dating from be-
fore 1700 are included because of their special musical interest. The listing contains
some music composed before the invention of the piano, especially trio sonatas,
since much of that involving literature is effective when performed on the piano.
