Preface and Acknowledgments
Te Prototype
Te topic of this monograph was initiated by an invitation to present a keynote
address in Prague at a November 2018 conference: “Image, Phenomenon,
and the Imagination in the Phenomenology of Religious Experience.” Te
paper I delivered, “Te Phenomenology of Belief: Media Technologies and
Communities of Sense,” provided the prototype for Chapter 1. Refecting on the
conversation I entered as I prepared and delivered that paper, it became evident
that to contemplate religious experience is to join a history of conversations
about life that have persisted in a wide variety of disciplines and media genres,
populated by notable artists, writers, and protagonists. Some of them were
featured in my Prague keynote and several additional ones receive attention in
the book’s chapters. Here I want to rehearse briefy one who doesn’t, Spinoza,
because of the passion and intensity with which he pursued a conversation
about life and because he is an exemplar of the kind of critical thinking that
I reference in each chapter. Tose features of Spinoza’s philosophy are noted
by Gilles Deleuze, who refers to the way Spinoza exemplifes “the power of
thinking,” which “the best society” exempts “from the obligation to obey.”1
Heeding that insight, I want to summarize the Spinoza efect that inspires
