(p. xi)
I am grateful to the distinguished authors of the essays presented here. Several
contributions were made on relatively short notice, and others in spite of severe health
problems. Several authors offered valuable suggestions concerning other possible
contributions to this volume, including my own, and concerning possible authors. I wish
to single out Stephen White and Terry Ball, who were especially helpful. I am grateful to
Peter Momtchiloff, Philosophy Editor at Oxford University Press, for consistent guidance
and ever helpful advice during the entire period in which this volume was conceived and
brought to completion. The outside advisors for Oxford University Press made valuable
suggestions, amongst them the need to include contributions on non-Western approaches.
I am grateful to Sarah Parker and Catherine Berry for maintaining the volume's website,
to Daniel Bourner and Ms. Parker for seeing the volume through the press, and to Hilary
Walford for indefatigable copy editing. I am sad to report the death of one contributor,
Perez Zagorin, who was not only an eminent historian but also a dear friend. His splendid
essay on the development of religious toleration is the last thing he wrote. As ever, I am
grateful to my wife, Meg, and daughters, Caroline, Susanna, and Deborah, for moral
support.
