Time of Your Life
It’s that old cliche—high school is the time of your life, your very best years, your glory
days. Personally, Fve never really bought it; I refuse to believe that the acme of our lives
could possibly come at a time when we still can’t go to the bathroom without permission.
But one thing that rings true is this—regardless of whether the days we’ve spent here were
the best times of our lives, they were among the most important. High school encompasses
an immense and vital transformation, the formative years that take us from our eighth
grade teachers’ watchful eyes to the threshold of the real word. So over the past four years,
while our conscious selves were busy willing the hands of the clocks to move forward, just
below the surface we were building a foundation. Our decisions about such prosaic things
as which overcrowded lunch table to choose or which elective would let us off easiest have
had profound but most likely unnoticed effects. Though largely oblivious to the process,
we have been growing, steadily and irreversibly moving forward, both as individuals and
as the FHS Class of 2005.
The symptoms of our collective metamorphosis are practically tangible. Do you
remember your first day of freshman year and the relief you felt when your first period
teacher deciphered the baffling lunch schedule for you? Did you get lost on your way to
class? And how long did it take to convince yourself that you had enough time to get to
your locker from H wing between bells? A few years of striding these corridors with in¬
creasing confidence are under our belts, and we are virtually unrecognizable as those
cowed and confused freshmen clogging main hall. We’re more relaxed, more assured,
more at ease with our own abilities as we step through the doorways of our classrooms.
But it’s more than just our attitude; deeper and subtler changes have been at work on our
psyches. We are wiser. We have learned to prioritize, to handle criticism, to heal heart¬
break, to foster lasting friendships, to make our own decisions, to set our own goals. From
a flurry of schoolwork and standardized tests, homecoming dances, and Friday nights out,
our identities have emerged.
Within the walls of Franklin High School, we’ve laid the groundwork for the people
we are to become, and our diverse successes in doing so deserve congratulations. We are
intellectuals and artists, we are athletes and actors. We are volunteers and activists and
leaders and revolutionaries. We are taxpayers, we are voters. We are told that we are the
voice of the future; we can now step forward and say, in fact, we are the voice of today.
We are ready to take our places in the world beyond FHS. As we leave graduation behind,
however, we should all bear this in mind: as much as we’ve grown and endured and ac¬
complished, we are not yet finished. Every new day affords us new opportunities to add to
the foundation we’ve so triumphantly begun. So don’t settle for the sad nostalgia of the
glory days mythology; expand your horizons, renew your mind, and enrich your existence
every chance you get. The time of our lives is still ahead of us, and, supported by the solid
ground of our collective defining experiences, we run out to meet it.
