He shows how scribes who produced the laws of the Pentateuch drew upon the ethical and legal implications of the stories of Adam and Eve; Cain and Abel; Jacob, Esau, and Laban; Joseph and his brothers; and the exodus. Of particular interest is his discussion of the literary unit known as the Ten Commandments. Carmichael argues that God’s action in a story is transformed in this unit into a rule consistent with the judgment implicit in the narrative.Observing the complex limits between law-making and storytelling, Carmichael sets forth a challenging new hypothesis of how the Bible was constructed.
