ForeWord
I am delighted to introduce this seminal book, The Military Leadership
Handbook. This volume represents an important addition to the
body of literature both on leadership and the profession of arms.
It provides an applied and readable compendium of ideas, concepts, and
practices related specifically to military leadership. Although focused, to
a large degree, on the Canadian context and experience, it is applicable
to any military organization and, quite frankly, to anyone interested in
the study of leadership.
Moreover, The Military Leadership Handbook adds to the innovative
Strategic Leadership Writing Project created by the Canadian Forces
Leadership Institute and the Canadian Defence Academy Press. This
book continues to demonstrate our commitment to capturing key themes
and operational topics of importance for military personnel serving in
the complex security environment of today. This important work will be
of great value to those leaders charged with the heavy responsibility of
leading their nation’s sons and daughters into harm’s way, as well as those
leaders with equally important responsibilities to develop and improve
their institution’s capabilities to enable mission success.
Accordingly, I wish to reiterate the importance of this book, as well as
all others in the Strategic Leadership Writing Project series. These publica-
tions provide military professionals and the public at large with theoretical
knowledge, as well as practical experience, to ensure a better understand-
ing of leadership. They will assist both military leaders to better prepare
to lead and command in the demanding environments in which they find
themselves, and non-military professionals to comprehend the enormous
