Intheyears1914-1918thousandsofMiddlesbroughmenandwomenservedtheir
countryinatimeofhardship,stressandsufferingbothforthetroopsonthe
battlefrontsandthoseleftathome.
AftertheArmisticeinNovemberof1918handsomememorialtabletsandplaques
recallingthefallenwereerectedintheworks,shopsandchurchesofthe
Middlesbrougharea.
Atthistimeacommitteewasformedtoconsiderthequestionofawarmemorial
forthetownasawholetorememberthecitizenswhohadlaiddowntheirlives.
Inthewordsofthecommittee,
“Werecognisethesplendidsacrificemadebyourmenandwedesirethatour
childrenandourchildren’s’childrenshouldhearthestoryandshareinthe
inspirationwhichsuchsacrificewillalwaysgive”.
TheresponseofthetownspeopleresultedinthefinecenotaphofAberdeen
graniteandthewallofPortlandstonecontainingthebronzepanelswiththe
namesofthefallenthatweseetodayattheentrancetoAlbertPark.
Thememorialworkswerecompletedatacostofapproximately£17,000andthe
peopleofthetownattendedintheirthousandsforthededicationandunveiling
ceremonywhichtookplaceonNovember11th1922.
Thisrollofhonourcontainscloseto3500namesofthefallenwhoareremembered
onthememorialandalsothosewhosenameswereputforwardbytheirfamilies
aftertheunveilingceremony.
IfeltitfittingthatasthecentenaryoftheonsetoftheGreatWarapproachesI
shouldtryandaddalittleinformationonthoserememberedandtheactionsin
whichtheylaiddowntheirlives.
IwouldjustaddthatmuchasIregretit,detailsonsomeofthesesbravepeopleis
notavailableduetothepassageoftimebuttheirnameswillstillappearinthetext
astheydoonthememorialpanels.

Finallyjustafewpointstoconsider,
ItwillbenoticedthatonsomeoftheentriesnoMiddlesbroughconnectionmaybe
obvious,indeedthepersonappearstohavecomefromwelloutsidetheareaor
eventhecountry.
Itmustberememberedthatitwasthetownspeoplewhoputthenamesforward
forinclusionandasanexamplearelationwhostayedwiththefamilyinthetown
occasionally,couldwellappearafterhisfamilytookthetroubletoforwardthe
name.
Middlesbroughwasathrivingcentreofindustryatthetimeandapersonmaywell
havebeenemployedinthetownbeforehostilitiesandhadtheirnameincludedby
workmates.
Servingunderanaliasisalsoquitecommonandalthoughsometimesusedtocover
criminalactivity,wasnormallyjustapersonkeentoservebutunderageandusing
anotheridentity.
Alsoamotherwhohadtakenanotherman’snamemighthaveoffspringwho
preferredtoserveusingtheirnaturalfather’sname.
Doubleentriesforthesamenamealsoappearquiteafewtimes,forexample,
SamuelAlderandSAlder.
Ibelievetheyareoneandthesamepersonnamedtwiceasaresultofalarge
familywithdifferentbranchesputtingthenameforwardtwice.
Thepersonwillappearinthelistingasnamedonthememorialwithanyvariations
inspellingandsecondnamesbeingincludedinthetext.
Itwillbenoticedthatsomeentriesbegin“Ibelievethistobe”.
Thesearepeoplewhotothebestofmyjudgementarethosenamedbutcannot
be100%certain.Theyareincludedwiththebestintentionsandifamistakeis
madeImakemyapologiesinadvance.
