INTRODUCTION
This catalogue covers all the items in the special collection ofliterary manuscripts inthe
College Library texcludes the nineteenth century manuscripts which form part ofother

special collections,such asthose relating toJohn Keble and containing his literary works,and

those containing writings b William Bright and Henry Parry Liddon.' Howeveer,Ihave
included fragments ofmedieval manuscripts preserved nprinted books among hLibrary's

other holdings Most ofthe western manuscripts described here are medieval ones but some
. ,
(MSS 5, 27, 28, 33, 43, 44, 65, 82, 87)are from later periods.
The History ofthe Collection
The history ofthe collection is short. Keble College was founded in 1870, and with the
exception ofMS 82 allthe manuscripts described here came tothe College inthe first forty
five years of itsexistence.
On St Mark's Day 1879, the first anniversary ofthe opening ofthe College Library,
Dr Edward King, the Regius Professor ofPastoral Theology, who later became bishop of
Lincoln,preached asermon inthe College.Itincluded the following passages:

support one student ormore whose work should be to beskilled inthis palaeography,and who,being
so skilled,should be readyfor work athome orabroad in the interests ofliterature, and at the
disposal ofthe society.That suchastudent shouldhave been found inKeble College and inconnec
tion with this Keble Library,would,Iventure to think, add another ground ofhope for this
hopeful society
