MacHale launches his eerie new trilogy with a story so packed with chilling suspense, readers will want to sleep with the light on.

The voices grew louder, more urgent, as if they were running out of time. It sounded like gibberish. It was gibberish. I knew that. It was a dream, right? That’s what I told myself and it calmed me down. That is, until I heard a single word break through the haze as plain and clear as if someone had leaned over and spoke directly into my ear.

--“Morpheus.”
From School Library Journal
Grade 6–10—High school sophomore Marshall Seaver is being haunted by a figure out of his imagination in this fast-paced fantasy thriller. The skeletal character he obsessively draws, the Gravedigger, has come to life and is threatening him. He's also seeing other frightening images that don't make sense. Marshall was supposed to spend his summer vacation with his best friend, but Coop is forced to go to his family's lake house instead. Then he disappears, and Marshall is the only person who believes that his friend is in trouble and hasn't just run off again. Coop's snobbish older sister is unwillingly drawn into helping him figure out what's going on after she experiences some of the same impossible visions that he has. Marshall's narration gives the plot credibility. Readers experience what he is feeling as the suspense builds and events spiral out of his control to the twisty ending. In this first book in the trilogy, major plot threads remain unresolved but, hopefully, they will be explained in the rest of the series. Like MacHale's "Pendragon" books (S & S), the writing and characterization are secondary to the action-packed plot. Most readers will be hooked from the first line to the last and will be anxiously awaiting the next book.—Sharon Rawlins, New Jersey State Library, Trenton
(c) Copyright 2010. Now he has had a falling out with his best friend, Cooper; strange noises and visions are haunting him; and most distressing of all, a ghoulish character he draws named “Gravedigger” has come to life and is stalking him. MacHale follows his successful Pendragon series with a scary read for middle-schoolers, reminiscent of Stephen King. Although some of the necessary plot details in this Morpheus Road series opener are baldly laid out rather than elegantly spun, readers will find themselves racing through this thriller to solve one mystery after another. There's a bit of predictable but enjoyable light romance between Marshall and Cooper's aloof and condescending sister, Sydney. MacHale focuses on the poignancy of losing those we love, and clinging to the ghosts of memory, while laying the groundwork for what promises to be another popular series.
