Contributors
Christopher Carey is Professor of Classics at University College
London. He is editor of Lysias: Selected Speeches and, with R.A. Reid,
Demosthenes: Selected Private Speeches, and author of several articles
on Athenian law.
Angelos Chaniotis is Professor of Greek History at Heidelberg Univer-
sity. He is author of Historie und Historiker in den griechischen In-
schriften and Die Verträge zwischen kretischen Poleis in der
hellenistischen Zeit, and one of the editors of Supplementum Epi-
graphicum Graecum.
Michael Gagarin is James R. Dougherty Centennial Professor of
Classics at the University of Texas, Austin. He is author of Drakon and
Early Athenian Homicide Law, and Antiphon the Athenian: Oratory,
Law and Justice in the Age of the Sophists, and editor of the series The
Oratory of Classical Greece.
Edward M. Harris is Professor of Classics at Brooklyn College and the
Graduate School, City University of New York. He is author of Aeschines
and Athenian Politics, and, with R.W. Wallace, editor of Transitions to
Empire: Essays in Greek and Roman History, 360-146 BC.
Adriaan Lanni received a M. Phil. in Classics from Cambridge Univer-
sity and is a graduate of Yale Law School. She is now a member of the
Society of Fellows, Harvard University.
F.S. Naiden is Assistant Professor of Classics at Tulane University. He
is completing a study of supplication in Greece and Rome.
Robert Parker is Wykeham Professor of Ancient History in the Uni-
versity of Oxford. He is author of Miasma: Pollution and Purification in
Early Greek Religion and Athenian Religion: A History.
Peter J. Rhodes is Professor of Ancient History in the University of
Durham. He is author of The Athenian Boule, A Commentary on the

Aristotelian Athenaion Politeia and, with the late David Lewis, The
Decrees of the Greek States. He is editor, with Lynette Mitchell, of The
Development of the Polis in Archaic Greece.
Lene Rubinstein is Reader in Ancient History at Royal Holloway

Athens and Litigation and Co-operation: Supporting Speakers in the
Courts of Classical Athens, and, with P. Flensted-Jensen and T. Nielsen,
editor of Polis and Politics: Studies in Ancient Greek History.
James Sickinger is Associate Professor of Classics at Florida State

Preface
Several years ago we invited a group of scholars to contribute essays on
the general question of the relationship between the laws and the
courts, both in Athens and in other parts of the Greek world in the
Classical and Hellenistic periods. This volume would not have been
possible if it had not been for the spirit of cooperation and patience
shown by all the contributors, for which we are deeply grateful. We
should also like to thank Professor P.A. Cartledge for his suggestion that
we should submit this volume for publication with Duckworth. Mr R.K.
Pitt kindly agreed to produce the Index locorum for the volume, which
we hope will facilitate its use. Professor J.G.F. Powell subjected the
proofs to eagle-eyed scrutiny at the final stage. Finally, we should like
to express our gratitude to Deborah Blake of Duckworth for her patient
handling of the project, which was delayed at a crucial stage because of
the small person to whom this volume is dedicated.
The convention adopted in rendering Greek names in their Latinized
forms follows that of the Loeb series in those contributions that focus
primarily on Athens. On the other hand, in those contributions that are
based primarily on epigraphical texts from other poleis we have pre-
ferred to transliterate Greek personal names as well as toponyms
directly. Inevitably, compromises have had to be made along the way.
Most contributions were submitted in the year 2000 and therefore do not
refer to literature published after that date.
