Abstract Thelampyridbeetlesof thegenusStenocladiusfromtheRyukyuIs-
lands,SouthwestJapan,arerevised.Twonewspeciesaredescribedand illustrated:S.
)oshinlasa1sp nov fromAmami-0hshimaIs.oftheAmamigroupandS flavlpe,mlssp
novfromKume-jimaIs.oftheOkinawagroup.Themalerightantennaeandthemalegen-
italiaofallthespeciesareillustratedandakeytothemisprovided.
ThegenusStenocladiusbelongstothelampyridsubfamilyOtotretinaetogether
with the genus Drilaster. Twenty-twospecies have been described from Southeast
Asia,andthreespecieshavepreviouslybeenknownfromtheRyukyuIslandsofJapan
(NAKANE,1981, 1983, 1997; 0HBA, 1986,1998;SAT0, 1985). Theadultmalesare
characterizedbythefollowingpoints:bodynotsoflattenedandslender;headnotcon-
cealedcompletelybypronotum,pectinateantennaelongandlarge,particularlythefla-
gellumexceptapical segment with longpectinae, forminga comb-likeshapeasa
whole.
Recently,SUZUKI(1997) reportedinhismolecularphylogeneticstudiesofJapan-
ese fireflies that Drilaster andStenocladiusdidnot formacluster, but that thelatter
formedaclusterwiththegenusRhagophthalmusofthefamilyRhagophthalmidae.The
adult femalehadbeenunknown,butOHBAetal.(1997)explained forthefirsttimethe
morphologyoftheuniquelarviformfemaleandthematingbehaviorofseveralspecies
ofthegenus.
I had opportunities toexamineand revise theStenocladiusspecies from the
RyukyuIslands.Afteracarefulexamination,ithasbecomeclear that twoadditional
speciesoccur inthearchipelago. Theymustbenewtoscience,andw加bedescribed
inthispaper. Theabbreviationsusedhereinareasfollows:HW-maximumwidth of
hea includingeyes;PW-maximumwidthofpronotum;PL - lengthofpronotum,
measuredalong themid-line;EW-humeralwidthofelytra;EL- maximumlengthof

TheJapanesespeciesofthisgenusareverysimilartooneanotherinmorphologi-
cal characters includingthoseofmalegenitalia.Commonexternal charactersareas
follows.
Male. Medium-sizedspeciesofslenderhabitus,withlongappendages.Body
elongate,subpara11e1-sidedandweaklydepressed;integumentweaklysclerotized;head
relatively largebutpronotumsmall;hindbody longandslender;antennaevery long
andslender,pectinateinsegments3-10;all legslongandratherslender.Bodyalmost
shiny,regularlyclothedwithpalesubrecumbentpubescence; antennal age11um,max-
illaryandlabialpalpi,tibiaeandtarsi frosted,moredenselycoveredwithveryminute
subrecumbentsetae.
Headlarge,alittlewider thanlong,depressedabove, rathercoarselypunctateon
dorsalsurface.Antennalsocketslocatedonbothsidesofelevatedfrontalarea,onlya
littleseparated fromeachother,distinctly orientedanteria not visible from dorsal
side.Antennaelongandslender,extendingbeyondthemiddleofelytra,with age1lar
segments1-8pectinate;eachpectinaarisenfromthebasalpartofthestem,veryelon-
gatedspatularand2to6timesaslongasthestem itselfaccordingtospecies;each
stemsubcylindrica1andveryweaklyconstrictedatthemiddle;terminal?age11umsim-
plyspatular,distinctly longer thananyoftheothersegments;scapeshort,subcylindri-
ca1orclavate,widestattheapex,moreorlessbentoutsides;pedicelmuchreducedand
theshortest,almostas longaswide,butmoreor lessvaryingindividually inrelative
lengthofeachstemandpectina.Eyesglobular,largeandprominent,distinctlysepa-
ratedfromeachotherbyawidth1tel.5timesthediameterofeyeindorsalview,alit-
tleapart from bases of mandibles. Labrum small and transverse, slightly dilated
apicad,arcuatelyemarginateatthecentreoffrontmargin;theanterioranglesrounded.
Front-clypea1suturenotrecognized. Mandiblessmallandveryslender, constantly in-
curve notsomuchpointed. Maxillarypalpus5-segmente relatively longandslen-
der;1stsegmenttheshortest;2ndlong,nearlyequal inlengthtoterminal;3rdalittle
longer than2nd;terminalbottle-shaped,withswollenbasalpartandabruptlyacumi-
nate fromapicalthir moderatelybluntat theapex. Labialpalpus3-segmentedand
slender;1stand2ndsegmentsalmostequal inlength;terminalspindle-shape almost
twiceaslongas2n moderatelyacuteattheapex.
Pronotum relativelysmall andshort,semicircular indorsalviewbut rather vari-
ableinshape,sometimestransverse,widestjustbeforethebase,alittlebroader than
headanddistinctlynarrowerthanthehumeralwidthofelytra;anteriormarginwidely
arcuateandproducedanteria stronglyre exed,notangulate;sidesalmostparallelor
very faintly constrictedjust before thebase;basal anglesbrie?yprojectedoutwards,
each formingaminutetubercle;basalmarginsublinearbutmoderatelysinuateonboth
sides, narrowlybordere transversely concaveonbothsidesalongthebasal margin;
disccoarselyor closelypunctate, densely clothedwithpalepubescenceall over, nar-

rowlymarginatedthroughout,providedwithapairofelevatedanddepressedareas;
medic-longitudinal furrowalongmid-linepresentinbasaltwo-thirds.Scutellumtrian-
gularwithroundedapex,punctateonthesurface.
Elytrarather long,conjointly2.70to2.75timesaslongaswide,constantlycov-
eredwithpalesubrecumbentpubescence;humeridistinctlyprominentanteriad;sides
parallelorsubpara11e1thoughveryslightlyconvergentposteriad,morestronglysoto-
wards rounded apices in apical parts, distinctly dehiscent, narrowly marginated
throughout includingsuture, themarginbeingconcealedathumeralportion; dorsal
surfacedistinctlyrugu1ose,irregularlyandcloselypunctate;eachelytronwith4vague
costae,ofwhichthe2ndcostaislongbutdoesnotreachelytra1apices;3rdthelongest
andmostconspicuous, reachingelytra1apex;outermostand innermostcostaeshort,
veryweakandratherobsolete.Eachcostaobliquelyrunninginwardstowardstheely-
tra1apex.
All legslongandslender;trochantersshort,1/3to2/5aslongasfemora; femora
moderatelyfusiformand atteneddorso-ventra11y;tibiaealsomoderatelyflattenedand
slender,almoststraightor faintly incurved. Tarsal formula5-5-5; all tarsi almost as
longasthetibiae;1sttarsomerethelongest,alittlelongerthanthecombinedlengthof
2ndand3rd;4thsmall,deeplyexcavatedmedic-apically for thereceptionofthe5th;
clawssimple.Bothtibiaeandtarsidenselycoveredwithminutesubrecumbentsetae.
Lateralsidesofmetasternumalmoststraight.
Abdomen broad and attene with8visiblesegmentsinventral view;sidesof
2ndto4thsegmentsalmostparallelandthengraduallyconvergentfromthe5thtoanal
end;8thsterniteverysmall,roundedormoderatelytruncatedattheapex.
Malegenitaliaveryweaklysclerotized, trilobedandalmostsymmetrical,moreor
lessvariableintheshapeindividually.Aedeagusstout,ratherflatteneddorso-ventra11y,
constantlybentdorsad;sidesgraduallyconvergentfromnearthemiddle;apexrounded
ormoderatelytruncated;ventralsurfacebearingmembraneoussac-likeorganjustbe-
hindthemiddle.Parameresclearlyshorterthanaedeagus;eachparamereapparently
narrowedtowardstheapexandmoderatelypointed,theapicalportionsbeingmembra-
neousandflexible,moreorlesscurvedinwardsoroutwards,withmanysenseorgans.
Bothparameresroundlyjoiningatthebase.Basalplateveryweaklysclerotizedandal-
mostmembraneous,cordateasawhole,roundlyprojectedoneachsideofanterior
marginanddeeplyemarginateat thecentre, theprojectionsbeingsometimesmoder-
atelyasymmetrical.
Female. Bodyalmostcompletelylarviform,elongate,cylindricalandparallel-
orsubpara11e1-sided;theintegumentveryweaklysclerotized.
Headcapsuledarkreddishbrown; lateralocellarareablackish;dorsalandlateral
areasdecolorized around thesocketsofminutesetae;mouth-partsyellowishbrown,
withtheexceptionofmandibleswhichareshinyanddarktoblackishbrown,palerto-
wardsthebases;antennaeyellowishbrownwithwhitishbasalarticulatingmembrane.
Thoraxandabdomenalmost milky white topaleyellow, with intersegmental mem-
branetranslucentlymilkywhite;eachbodytergumbecomingdarker onbothsides,

sometimeswithapairofbrownishmarkings;ventralsurfaceusuallypalerthandorsal.
Legsyellowishbrown.
Headof lampyridlarva1typeincludingmouthparts, but dorsal cleavagelines
completely absent. Head capsuledepressed above, coarsely bearingminute setae,
widestacrosslateralocellarareaoratthemiddle;nasaleareastronglydepressed,with
manyspineson frontalmargin.Labrumabsent.Lateralocelli2to6innumber.Anten-
naeshortbutthick,3-or4-segmentedincludingscapeandpedicel,graduallynarrowed
towardstheterminalsegment;subapicalsegmentwithatransparentsenseorganinthe
extero-ventra1partsnearapices;terminaloneusuallytheshortestorminute,withsev-
eralminutesenseorganandsetaeattheapices.Mandiblesconstantlyincurvedbutnot
somuchpointed.Maxillaewith1segmentofgaleaand3segmentsofpalpus.Cardo
fusedwithstipesandevanescent.Labiumwith2segmentsofpalpus,prementumdi-
latedanteria clearlyexcavatedatthecentreofanteriormargin.
Thoracicsegmentsgraduallyreducedinlengthandincreasedinwidthtowardsthe
posterior;sidesdivergenttowardstheposterior; frontmarginofprothoraxroundedand
arcuatebutsometimesangulateonbothsides.Episternumandepimeronrecognizable.
Legsthick andveryrobust,withmanyspinesonventer fromtrochanter to 1st tar-
somere.Coxaethelargestandlongtriangular;trochanterstriangular,obliquelyarticu-
latedtofemora; tibiaenearlyahalfaslongasfemora.Tarsal formula2-2-2; 1sttar-
somereverysmall;2ndabout3to4timesaslongas1st,andalittlelongerthantibiae.
Clawssimpleandcomplete,dilatedatthebase.
First to7thabdominalsegmentsalmostequal in lengthandwidth,parallel-or
subpara11e1-sided;1aterotergaandpleuraclearlyrecognizedasfolds;sidesmoreorless
abruptlyconvergent from8th; loththesmallest,greatlyretractedinto9th,withapair
of 2-segmented cerci; 1st segment largeand long, triangular inprofile; 2nd very
minuteandpapilliform.

relativelysmalleyesandshortantennalscape,themuchlongerpectinaeofantennal
flagellarsegments3-10andconfigurationofmalegenitalia.Thelarvaandadult fe-
malewerealreadydescribedandfiguredbyOHBAelal.(1996,1997).Generalmor-
phologyof femaleissimilartothatofSazunlai. Itcanbeeasilydistinguished from
thatofS.shit・akiibytheabsenceofcolour-markingsofbody, thenumberofantennal
segmentsandtheshapeofcerci. 0HBAetal. (1997)observedthematingbehavior,
whichwasconsidered“LBsystem”communication(0HBA,1983).

closelysimilartothatofSyoshlmasa1spnov.ingeneralappearance.
