The year 1950 will be remembered in the history of Journalism in Calcutta, for that was when the loama-i an v/u
of Calcutta University was founded. Calcutta University was a pioneer in introducing the teaching of Journalism ir. ;r.h
was a fascinating story. Eminent journalists, educationists and former members of Parliament initiated the cc-irse n i . .:'t.
University.
Chapalakanta Bhattacharya, a veteran journalist, described ,the Department as an "'educational centre of the biflpl; order
of excellence". He had to face stiff opposition from that section of the profession which insisted that '‘Journalists aforboiild
not made’. Many of Chapalakanta Bhattacharya’s students are now eminent journalists. So journalists aren’t- idwaysdfeflif.,;-

Sudhanshu Basu, the Editor of the Hindusthan Standard started the post graduate degree course in .Journalism .

newspapers, priodicals, mass communication, broadcasting, advertising and public relations. Several "old boy A' and ’old
girls" now hold key positions in media organisations, some of them have returned to their class poms as teacheips.
And September 17, 1993, is the day, when we will meet in the REUNION function of-this Department •<«.... > .
Journalism Students'is not just a nostalgia but is meant for closer interaction among students, ex-stodente and'tesefers, v'
Therefore, THE JOURNALISM CONGRESS is the kind of interaction among the media people which will be a new step ■■■';
to the Journalists of tomorrow and we the organiser, that is, the Journalism Department is'growing, and growing- from,
strength to strength.
