The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge present to the
countrythecommencementoftheirLibraryforschools,designedtoem-
brace,when completed,a fewhundredvolumes,wriiten and compiled
withspecialreferencetothewantsoftheyouthofourcountry. Itwill
includeintherangeofitssubjectsworks inthevariousdepartmentsof
knowledgemost interestinganduseful tothe great bodyofthepeople,
including history,voyages and travels,biography,natural history,the
physical,intellectual,moral,andpoliticalsciences,agriculture,manufac-
tures,arts,commerce,thebelles lettres,and thehistoryand philosophy
ofeducation.
Theincreasing interest inthesubjectofschoollibrariesinseveralof
theStates,and therepeatedcallsupontheCommitteefortheirLibrary,
haveinducedthem to issuethepresent selectionfromexistingpublica-
tions tomeet the immediatewantsofourschools,while theygoon,as
fastaspossible,tocompletethe planannounced intheirpubUshed pro-
spectus. Theywill regard, in the execution ofit, the different ages,
tastes, circumstances,andcapacitiesofreaders.
TheCommittee present the following fiftyvolumes,chieflystandard
worksofpermanentinterestandvalue,whichhavealreadyreceivedex-
tensivelythepublic approbation in thiscountryand in Europe,as the
commencementoftheseries,tobeextended from time to time,until it
shall comprise a well-selected and comprehensive Library of Useful
Knowledge,worthyofaplaceineveryschoolroomofourcountry.
Itwill be thegreatestcareoftheCommittee,that thewhole be per-
vaded and characterized byaspirit ofChristian moralitycalculated to
refineandelevatethemoralcharacterofournation.
