A heated debate among curriculum
theorists and other educators has devel-
opedover theissueofwhat schools doand
do not do, particularly with respect to the
overt and tacit teaching that takes place at
the level of classroom teaching. While
there has been a growing consensus that
schools are indeed agencies of socializa-
tion and thereby do more than simply
teach subject matter and technical skills,
no such consensus exists regarding the
role schools play in the social, moral, and
economic reproduction of the existing
society. What has become quite clear is
that educators can no longer examine
schooling simply through the lens of the
formal curriculum. Put another way, edu-
cators can no longer ignore the impor-
tance and significance of the hidden
curriculum as a major dimension of the
schooling process, and they will need to
provideopportunities forstudents to make
a systematic study of the subject.
This book taps into some of the best of
the theoretical and ethnographic research
that has provided a valuable and compre-
hensive framework for using the proble-
matic of the hidden curriculum as a
powerful analytical tool in both the de-
velopment ofeducational theory andclass-
room research.
