The two most important collections of early Syriac manuscripts are found at St. Catherine's Monastery on Mount Sinai and Deir al-Surian monastery in Egypt. Without these collections, our knowledge of early Syriac literature after the 5th century would be much poorer. Deir al-Surian holds the larger collection, numbering in the hundreds, due to the efforts of Abbot Mushe of Nisibis in the early 10th century who brought many manuscripts back from Baghdad. These dry desert monasteries were ideal for the preservation of manuscripts from before 1000 AD, while elsewhere in the Middle East few such early Syriac manuscripts survive due to climate.
