Hartwig Braun was working as an
architect in Amsterdam when he
knocked up a cheerful aerial drawing
of the city to send as his annual
Yuletide greeting to family and friends
in his native Germany. He’d always
harboured a keen appreciation for
metropolitan landscapes, perspective
drawings and doodling. “When I was
a kid I used to decorate my notebooks
with little sketches during boring
lessons, and I’ve always had a passion
for maps,” he says.
Every time that Isaac Lilos laid eyes
on the illustration, he lobbied Hartwig
to quit his day job and consider
making his distinctive doodles into
a much larger enterprise. Born and
raised in Israel, Isaac is a consummate
entrepreneur who has already run two
successful businesses in Britain. The
only person I’ve ever met who claims
that cold-calling is his passion, he’s
pretty persuasive to say the least.
Eventually, Isaac’s arguments won
the day; Hartwig handed in his notice
and the Arty Globe partnership was
born. The venture began as a market
stall a few days a week, but within only
a few months the pair knew they
needed a larger space. As the
illustrations show, they’ve got their
eyes on the horizon and expansion

“They really liked Hartwig’s style,
