Preface
This book includes the keynote lecture and fourteen selected papers that de-
scribe a general guideline and supporting concepts and tools for conceiving
technology development as a grammar. Recent advances in scientific and en-
gineering fields call for new disciplines, tools, and concepts. For example,
advances in computer simulation require new approaches to statistical tech-
niques to utilize computer simulation efficiently for technology development.
Thepaperscollectedinthisbookfocusonsuchnewapproachesbasedonthese
practicalrequirements.Theeditorsareconfidentthiscollectionwillcontribute
to the acceleration of technology development through the application of the
grammar of technology presented here.
The title of this book is influenced by Karl Pearson’s book The Grammar
of Science, published in 1892, which brought him recognition as a giant and
pioneer of statistics. His book introduced a grammar of science with a de-
scription of the roles of statistical treatments. While science at times has
been misunderstood as not being amenable to a standardized approach, one
of the contributions of Pearson’s book was that it offered a standardized ap-
proach to science. As his book demonstrated, behind the great innovations of
science, there exists a universal approach.
One of the present volume’s editors, Hiroe Tsubaki, has insisted on the
necessity of developing a new general approach to technology development
based on scientific and engineering advancements over time. This direction is
gradually gaining attention among many practitioners and academicians. In
otherwords,researchersandacademiciansaredrawntodevelopagrammarof
technology development as a standardized approach. Fortunately, the project
todevelopagrammaroftechnologydevelopmenthasbeensupportedbymany
organizations, including the Japanese Ministry of Education, the Japanese
Society for Quality Control (JSQC), the University of Tsukuba, and others.
Inparticular,theresearchproposalbyHiroeTsubakitodevelopthegram-
mar of technology development qualified for a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific
Research from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology,
Japan.Suchinteresthasacceleratedthedevelopmentofthegrammaroftech-

nology development, and was the impetus for a meeting around a research
projectonMay15,2004,attheNagoyaInstituteofTechnology.Atthatmeet-
ing,AkiraTakahashi,presidentofJSQC2003–2004,gavethekeynoteaddress.
That meeting can be regarded as the trigger for this ambitious project.
The following year, a workshop titled, “The Grammar of Technology
Development,”washeldonJanuary15–16,2005,attheUniversityofTsukuba.
It was a great opportunity to develop concepts, tools, and a grammar from
a variety of interdisciplinary viewpoints. After the workshop, we invited the
presenters to submit their papers in order to take the first step toward the
development of the grammar of technology development based on the discus-
sions at the workshop. Consequently, we are happy to include nine papers
along with the keynote lecture by Akira Takahashi from this inaugural work-
shop. Five additional papers were included after being reviewed by at least
two experts. The papers are classified into the following three parts:

Part II DE2: Design of Experiments in Digital Engineering
Part III Statistical Methods for Technology Development
The papers in Part 1 relate to a general and systematic approach to tech-
nologydevelopment.Thefirstpapersetsoutthefundamentalstrategyunder-
lying the grammar of technology development. There are various viewpoints
discussedregardingthesystematicapproachtotechnologydevelopment,such
as informed systems, quality function development for the environment, and
communication management. The final paper in this section presents a case
study of highly advanced technology development in a production system.
The papers in Part 2 discuss the applications of the design for experi-
ments in the digital engineering field. A grammar for the design of experi-
ments in computer simulation is introduced at the beginning of this section.
Applications of certain advanced techniques in the design of experiments are
discussed, such as uniform design and the response surface method. This sec-
tion also includes a discussion of the technological trends and applications
of the design of experiments in practice, particularly in the manufacturing
sector.
In Part 3, statistical methods for technology development, such as hybrid
simulation, and a sampler from discrete Dirichlet distribution are considered.
Inaddition,apaperontheapplicationofthemaximumlikelihoodmethodto
communication systems is included. The final paper in this section shows an
application of the statistical method to visualize melody sequences.
These collected papers should provide readers with advanced knowledge
of technology development.

1 Introduction
Thank you, Dr. Nishina, for that introduction. It is a real pleasure to speak
to you all today!
I’d like to start with a brief account of how I came to be invited to give
the keynote lecture.
I’m afraid that someone as unfit as I am for the academic world being
hauled up to give this kind of address is a perfect illustration of the proverb:
“Who spits against heaven, spits in his own face.”
Actually, I have been conscious of a problem in engineering for some time
now. Most of the time that we spend, as engineers in industry, is on the in-
ductive approach, using the inductive approach to find solutions. One of the
applications of this is statistical quality control (SQC), that is to say, statis-
tical approach. However, once having solved particular problems, they do not
follow through and find general solutions. I think that is because this step
would require us to add the deductive approach to our thinking. Meanwhile,
computer-aided engineering (CAE) is becoming a more and more important
tool. We have been using it more and more every day. CAE incorporates
both the deductive and the inductive approaches. Another very important
theme to be dealt with in industrial research is how to handle dispersion in
data.Asamatteroffact,IhavealreadyaskedtheauthoritiesinTheJapanese
SocietyforQualityControl(JSQC)toconsiderthisasoneoftheirmostimpor-
tant topics. Dr. Nishina has already described all that in detail; Dr. Nishina,
Dr. Tsubaki and many other researchers will join in and participate in the
project of Transdisciplinary Federation of Science and Technology. JSQC will
organize the research, with me as the chairperson. I had never dreamed that
any of that work would also be assigned to me.
So, this conference has begun with spitting against heaven, and now, we
are in the keynote lecture.
