Acknowledgments
I am grateful to the many people who helped bring this manuscript
to fruition. Many colleagues and students discussed the themes of

tude to Lily Venizelos whose energy, commitment and dedication leave
me in awe and who has been enormously helpful and supportive. Oliver

But most of all I need to thank my son Nicolas for being such a
patient “research assistant” and traveler. He spent the first 14 months
of his life on the road with me in four countries, adapted easily from
location to location and opened many hearts and doors in Greece with
his enthusiasm for life. He has come away from it all with a passion for
British children’s literature, the sea, turtles, Greek music and cheese pie.
This book is dedicated to him and my father who spent half his life in
Greece and inspired in me my interest in the environment as well as
Greece. During the writing of this book my father died and my son was
born within three weeks of each other and both have shaped this book
in many ways.
