PREFACE
The present study is an attempt to understand the phenomenon of the Augenblick in Heidegger's thought, and in particular its relation to the primacy of seeing and of 
theoria in Aristotle and in our philosophical and scientific tradition. In the title of the book, "the glance of the eye" is thus intended in both a broad and a narrow sense. 
In a broad sense, it refers to seeing and to the look, encompassing also the original sense of theoria as a seeing" or pure beholding. In a narrower sense, it translates 
the German word Augenblick, and carries both a visual and a temporal sense, conveying the "momentary'' character of seeing.
The origins of this study may be traced to a question and a suspicion. On the one hand, there was the question of what exactly was at stake in the experience of the 
Augenblick that seemed to me to occupy the very center of Heidegger's thought from early to late. While it seemed apparent that the Augenblick marked an 
experience of limit—of the limits of human understanding and of the intrinsic finitude of historical being—as an experience it nevertheless seemed to verge on the 
incomprehensible. Furthermore, although the phenomenon of the Augenblick lies at the heart, of Heidegger's thinking of being as time (so much so that one prominent 
commentator has described Being and Time as the attempt to elaborate a "philosophy of the Augenblick"),1 it also tends to be largely neglected even by those studies 
claiming to focus on Heidegger's thinking of temporality.2 On the other hand—and perhaps not unrelated to this relative neglect—the very word Augenblick arouses a 
certain suspicion in the modern, and especially "postmodern" philosophical ear, namely, the suspicion that, this word carries or testifies to a continued complicity with 
the recognized primacy of the

visual metaphor for knowledge that has allegedly dominated our philosophical tradition.3 Thus there arose also a further question: Was the experience of the 
Augenblick in Heidegger perhaps a last testimony to the problematic hegemony of vision and of theoria in our Western philosophical tradition? To what extent was 
Heidegger's thinking of the Augenblick complicit with the history of theoria?
It thus became evident that it would be impossible to consider adequately the phenomenon of the Augenblick in Heidegger without also considering its broader 
philosophical context: that of the history of theoria and of its instability at the beginning and end of philosophy. The Augenblick in Heidegger's thought, as the present 
study will show, manifests both continuities and disjunctions with the history of philosophy considered as a history of theoria. But the nature of the primacy of theoria 
for philosophy also meant that the status of theoria could not be considered on its own, but had to be understood in relation to those moments against which theoria 
delimits itself in establishing its definitive primacy, namely, praxis and poiesis. This delimitation, definitive for the subsequent tradition, occurs most decisively in 
Aristotle.
An early encounter and preoccupation with Aristotle's thought has long been recognized as important for Heidegger's work. But it is only with the recent publication in 
the Gesamtausgabe of a number of Heidegger's lecture courses dealing with Aristotle that the extent of his indebtedness to Aristotle has begun to be more fully 
acknowledged. Such acknowledgement, which is still in its initial stages, can itself arise only out of an equal appreciation of the extent to which Heidegger's 
phenomenological readings illuminate Aristotle's own texts in an original manner, letting them shine in unforeseen and unforeseeable ways. It should be noted, however, 
that the present study does not attempt to undertake a systematic interpretation of Heidegger's readings of Aristotle, but remains guided by its leading focus on the 
Augenblick and its relation to theoria. As the study will show, Heidegger's understanding of the Augenblick is influenced not only or primarily by his 
phenomenological encounter with Husserl (who remains guided by the primacy of a theoretical and scientific approach), or by the significance of this term in a number 
of thinkers who seek to resist the philosophical hegemony of theory (Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Jaspers), but
