Abstract Six species of the genus Monocerotesa are recorded from Sumatra .M. sumatrana is de-
scribed as a ncw species, and the Qthers are newly recorded,

The genus Monocerotesa was established fbr Chiasmia strigata Warren, 1893 from India by
Wehrli (1937 ),About twenty species have been placed in Monocerotesa (Parso nest al,,
l999) ,and they are mainly distribut eidn the Orienta lregion. Holloway (1994 )reported
fbur species from Borneo, two of which were described as new to science. In the same
paper ,he include dSumatra in the geographic arlange of M. minuta (Warre nb)u,t indicated
some doubt by adding a questio nmark, Therefbre there is as yet no certain record of
species of Monocerotesa from Sumatra.
I have examined many specimens of the genus collected in Sumatra ,especially by the late
Dr E. W. Diehl ,and checked all available type specimens at the Natura lHistor yMuseum to
confirm their identificat ioAns, a result, six species of Mbnocerotesa were found from
Sumatra, includin gone new species.
Detailed notes on the localitie osf colJecting sites in Sumatra were given by Diehl (1982,
1997) ,Kobes (1985 1,992) and Schintlmeist (er]994).
The followin gacronyms are used to indicat tehe location of the specimens. BMNH: The

This species was describe dby Prout (1932 f)rom Borneo, based on one "female" taken at
Mt Kinabalu ,as a subspecies of strigata from India ,The hototyp epreserve din BMNH,
however ,is not a female ,but a male specimen. I have examined the genitali aof the holo-
type, and find that it should be treated as a distin cstpecies. M, strigata was describe dfrom
India as Chiasmia by Warren (1893 4:12, pl .3: 22),
Simila rto strigata (Fig ,1), but somewhat smaller in size, both wings paler ,les sstrongly

suffused with ochreous. medial black band more developcd on forewing .However, individ-
ual variation is found in wing colour and maculation to somc cxtent in both species, so it is
necessary to examine the genitali wah,ich are distin citn both sexcs.
Male genital i(aFig ,13) .Simila rto those of strigata (Fi gL.2) ,but differe nftrom them as
fo]lows .Uncus shorter and stouter, slender dorsal proces sshorter; valva wider, especially
at apical part ,dorsa land ventral margins more rounded, the dista slpur-like proces sarising
more apically, the saccular spur shorter and Ies ssclerotized, the apical proces swith much
longe rsetae. Alse illustra tbeyd Holloway (199 4f,ig .582, as strigata).
Fema]e genital i(aFig .I9) .Simila rto those of strigata in bursa copulatrix, but different
from them in the shape of the sterigma: the medial two-pronged gclerotized part and it ssur-
rounding narrow band developed in strigata, but lackin gin this species. The female geni-
talia shown by Holloway (199 4f,ig ,577) were not those of commissa, but thosc of strigata
based on the female syntype from Khasia in India (BMNH, slide No, 16466).

Length of forewing 10-12 mm, wingspan 18-21 rnm. Simila rto M, tudiata (Warre n18,97)
from India in wing colour and markings, but much smaller in sizc (radia tlaen:gt hof
fbrewin g15-16mm, wingspan 26-28mm). Both wings wjth more contrast between yellow
and black areas, and with more defincd maculation.

strongly expanded, with a setose rounded process ;a small gpur-like proces smedially; ven-
tra] margin deeply incurved n,ot forming a distinc tsaccular spur. Aedeagus with an apical

Holloway （1994）は，ボル ネオからMonocerotesa　．M　4種を記録 し，その うちminuta の分布域に疑問符を
付して Sumatraを加えてい るカ§，同島からこれまで確実な本属の記録はなかっ た．本報で は，故Dr　E．
W ．Diehl（Sumatra）とMr　M ，　Sommerer （Munich ）の採集品を中心に，筆者自身が 1985年に採集した標．本
も加えて検討し，1新種を含む6種を確認することがで きた．同定にあたっ ては，イギリス 自然史博物館
（BMNH ）にある関連する タイプ標本を交尾器を含めて調査 した．
M ，coMMiSSCI （Prout）．　Bornco からM ．　strigata 　（Warren）（Sikkim）（属の タイプ種）の亜種 として記載され，
Holloway （1994）もそれに従っ てい るが、タイプ標本を比較 した結果，外観，雌雄交尾岩に明らかな差異
が認め られるので，種．に昇格した．
