The Genetic Ancestry of African Americans, Latinos,
and European Americans across the United States

Over the past 500 years, North America has been the site of ongoing mixing of Native Americans, European settlers, and Africans
(broughtlargelybythetrans-Atlanticslavetrade),shapingtheearlyhistoryofwhatbecametheUnitedStates.Westudiedthegenetic
ancestryof5,269self-describedAfricanAmericans,8,663Latinos,and148,789EuropeanAmericanswhoare23andMecustomersand
showthatthelegacyofthesehistoricalinteractionsisvisibleinthegeneticancestryofpresent-dayAmericans.Wedocumentpervasive
mixedancestryandasymmetricalmaleandfemaleancestrycontributionsinallgroupsstudied.Weshowthatregionalancestrydiffer-
encesreflecthistoricalevents,suchasearlySpanishcolonization,wavesofimmigrationfrommanyregionsofEurope,andforcedrelo-
cationofNativeAmericanswithintheUS.Thisstudyshedslightonthefine-scaledifferencesinancestrywithinandacrosstheUnited
Statesandinformsourunderstandingoftherelationshipbetweenracialandethnicidentitiesandgeneticancestry.
