There are several people that deserve recognition for the completion of this diffi
cult project.
The first is my mother, who never doubted the fact that I would successfully fin
ish. Then there are those who assisted me academically. The most important is
Professor Gunther E. Rothenberg. His book on the Archduke Carl and the Aus
trian army, read as an undergraduate, first drew me to the topic. Added to that was
his unswerving demand that my writing and research could always be better, and
that the topic was not as simple as I originally thought. The patience of Professors
Charles Ingrao, Robert McDaniel, and Vernard Foley in hammering out a number
of dilemmas is appreciated. I am also indebted to the encouragement of friends like
