Few books, like few legal petitions in the Spanish empire, are written without
agents and patrons. This book has many of both.
Primero, quisiera reconocer el apoyo del personal y de la administración
de los varios archivos consultados para este estudio. Aunque este proyecto me
requirió cargarlos con preguntas constantes sobre la organización de los archi-
vos y la ubicación de los pleitos, en toda ocasión, los archiveros me han acogido
no sólo con profesionalismo sino con entusiasmo. Entre ellos, se destacan el
apoyo en España del Archivo de la Real Chancellería de Valladolid, especial-
mente Carmen Cuevas y el director anterior Pedro Peduelo Martín; del director
del gran Archivo Municipal de Toledo, Mariano Ruipérez; y del Padre Miguel
